The new world was considered free of leprosy before the arrival of Europeans. In Suriname, historical migration routes suggest that leprosy could have been introduced from West Africa by the slave trade, from Asia by indentured workers, from Europe by the colonizers, and more recently by Brazilian gold miners. Previous molecular studies on environmental and ancient samples suggested a high variability of the strains circulating in the country, possibly resulting from the various migration waves.

Introduction: The importance of DNA repair enzymes in maintaining genomic integrity is highlighted by the hypothesis that DNA damage by reactive oxygen/nitrogen species produced inside the host cell is essential for the mutagenesis process. Endonuclease III (Nth), formamidopyrimide (Fpg) and endonuclease VIII (Nei) DNA glycosylases are essential components of the bacterial base excision repair process. Mycobacterium leprae lost both fpg/nei genes during the reductive evolution event and only has the nth (ML2301) gene.

Currently, over 200,000 new cases of leprosy are reported annually worldwide. Although leprosy was thought to have been eradicated in Taiwan, a few new cases still occur annually. Protean clinical manifestations of leprosy and immunological reactions result in delayed diagnoses.

Leprosy continues to be the belligerent public health hazard for the causation of high disability and eventual morbidity cases with stable prevalence rates, even with treatment by the on-going multidrug therapy (MDT). Today, dapsone (DDS) resistance has led to fear of leprosy in more unfortunate people of certain developing countries. Herein, DDS was chemically conjugated with five phytochemicals independently as dapsone-phytochemical conjugates (DPCs) based on azo-coupling reaction.

Background: Although leprosy is efficiently treated by multidrug therapy, resistance to first-line (dapsone, rifampin) and second-line (fluoroquinolones) drugs has been described worldwide. However, the characteristics of drug resistance in Southwest China remain unknown. Furthermore, the sensitivity of polymerase chain reaction (PCR)/sequencing for resistance detection is limited, especially for paucibacillary (PB) leprosy patients.
