Image-guided Interventions for Core Muscle Injury and Other Disorders in the Pubic Symphysis.

Radiographics

February 2025

Department of Medical Imaging, The Ottawa Hospital, 501 Smyth Rd, Ottawa, ON, Canada K1H 8L6 (D.V.F., J.L.); Department of Radiology, Radiation Oncology and Medical Physics, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (D.V.F., J.L.); Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (D.V.F., J.L.); and Department of Radiology, St. Paul's Hospital, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada (T.M.).

Formerly termed or , core muscle injury (CMI) encompasses abnormality of structures within the so-called core, which is essentially the hip, abdomen, and pubis. Compared with data on image-guided procedures of other joints, information regarding procedures performed to address CMI and other disorders of the pubic symphysis is lacking. These procedures can be daunting given the joint's small size, surrounding critical neurovascular structures, and three-dimensional anatomy.

Background: Femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) is frequently treated arthroscopically with osteoplasty and labral repair. Article Synopsis
  • Uremic leontiasis ossia (ULO) is a rare condition linked to renal osteodystrophy in patients with end-stage chronic kidney disease (CKD) and secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPTH), causing bone deformities that can lead to a 'leonine' facial appearance.
  • The case study focuses on a 39-year-old female patient undergoing treatment, who exhibited significant symptoms and had elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels, confirmed by CT scans.
  • Treatment involves a multidisciplinary approach including surgery and management of SHPTH to correct anatomical issues and prevent further complications.

Article Synopsis
  • Cementoplasty is a method used for treating fractures, but its effectiveness in weight-bearing long bones is debated; efforts to enhance bone cement strength include altering its chemistry or adding metal reinforcements.
  • This study aimed to compare the biomechanical properties of reinforced polymethylmethacrylate-based bone cement with a non-reinforced version by testing two reinforcement methods: using a Kirschner wire and a prestressed steel cable.
  • Results showed that both reinforcement techniques significantly increased the flexural strength of the bone cement compared to the non-reinforced version, but no significant difference in strength was found between the two reinforcement strategies themselves.

Gingival enlargement (GE) is characterized by the overgrowth of gingival tissues, often exacerbated by dental biofilm and certain medications or substances. This report presents a case of severe GE in a 61-year-old male with generalized stage 4, grade C periodontitis linked to methamphetamine use, which the patient disclosed occurred during a period of homelessness. The treatment involved antibiotic therapy, extractions, gingivectomy, gingivoplasty, and osteoplasty to facilitate future oral rehabilitation.
