Article Synopsis
  • Despite its benefits, the azacitidine-venetoclax combination (AZA-VEN) can also cause severe myelosuppression and a heightened risk of infections compared to azacitidine alone.
  • Effective management strategies include prevention of tumor lysis syndrome, minimizing infection risks, ensuring adequate recovery time between treatment cycles, and adjusting treatment duration based on blood count recovery to optimize patient care.

Precision and strategic targeting of novel mutation-specific vulnerabilities in acute myeloid leukemia: the semi-centennial of 7 + 3.

Leuk Lymphoma

September 2023

Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology, UMass Memorial Medical Center, Center for Clinical & Translational Science, UMass Chan Medical School, Worcester, MA, USA.

The year 2023 marks the semi-centennial of the introduction of classic '7 + 3' chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in 1973. It also marks the decennial of the first comprehensive sequencing efforts from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), which revealed that dozens of unique genes are recurrently mutated in AML genomes. Although more than 30 distinct genes have been implicated in AML pathogenesis, the current therapeutic armamentarium that is commercially available only targets and mutations, with olutasidenib as the most recent addition.

Nearly a century after rheumatic fever (RF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) was eradicated from the developed world, the disease remains endemic in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), with grim health and socioeconomic impacts. The neglect of RHD which persisted for a semi-centennial was further driven by competing infectious diseases, particularly the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pandemic. However, over the last two-decades, slowly at first but with building momentum, there has been a resurgence of interest in RF/RHD.

Semi-centennial sediment records of HCHs and DDTs from the East China marginal seas: Role of lateral transport in catchment.

Chemosphere

January 2021

Shanghai Key Laboratory of Atmospheric Particle Pollution and Prevention, Institute of Atmospheric Sciences, Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, Fudan University, Shanghai, 200433, China.

We reconstructed the history of the inputs of hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) into the marine environment to reveal the time-dependent influence of sources and associated anthropogenic activities in China, based on Pb-dated cores from the East China marginal seas (ECMS). The temporal dynamics of pesticide contamination expresses as deposition fluxes, inventories, and half-life estimations varied among the cores, suggesting heterogeneity in transport pathways of pollutants. The depth profiles of pesticide inputs closely followed their historical production and application timelines in China, and were also affected by human activities in catchments, with general declines in HCH and DDT inputs to the coring sites after their peak deposition.
