Unsaturated C20 fatty acids from bovine lens have been examined via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry of their pyrrolidide derivatives. The presence of arachidonic acid and 5,8,11-20:3 in bovine lens has been confirmed by this study. In addition, the 10-, 11-, 12-, and 13-isomers of 20:1 and the 7,13-, 18,14-, and 12,15-isomers of 20:2 were identified.

Calf processing events have important animal health, management, and sociocultural roles in the beef cattle industry. In western Canada, the three most commonly used methods for spring processing are roping and wrestling (RW), roping and Nord fork (NF), and tilt table (TT). The objective of this study was to understand the preferences and perceptions of handling event participants about calf handling and restraint methods commonly used during western Canadian beef calf processing events during the spring season.

The Cow Paradox-A Scoping Review of Dairy Bovine Welfare in India Using the Five Freedoms.

Animals (Basel)

February 2025

Department of Animal Behavior, Ecology, and Conservation, & Anthrozoology, Canisius University, Buffalo, NY 14208, USA.

India, the leading producer and consumer of milk, houses 307 million cattle, nearly a third of the world's total. A ban on cow slaughter exists in the majority of the Indian states. Intricately interweaved with the disputable yet publicly acknowledged sentiment of the cow's sacrality, and with the animal's utility value, the ban is capable of influencing the humans' treatment of the dairy animals.

This study aims to build an optimal drug delivery system by manufacturing and evaluating a hydrogel contact lens using Tretinoin (ATRA) and protein nanoparticles to improve the drug delivery system as an ophthalmic medical contact lens. To evaluate the optical and physical properties of the manufactured lens, the spectral transmittance, refractive index, water content, contact angle, AFM, tensile strength, drug delivery, and antibacterial properties were analyzed. The contact lens was manufactured to contain ATRA and bovine serum albumin (BSA) in different ways, and the results confirmed that A, B, and C each had different physical properties.

Elucidating the degradation mechanism of beef myofibrillar proteins under hydroxyl radical oxidation through the lens of cysteine oxidation modifications.

Food Chem X

January 2025

Hubei Key Laboratory of Edible Wild Plants Conservation & Utilization, College of Life Sciences, Hubei Normal University, Huangshi 435002, China.

The study aimed to assess the oxidative modification behavior of bovine myofibrillar proteins (MPs) cysteines (Cys) by hydroxyl radical (·OH) through the construction of an in vitr Fenton reaction system. The ·OH generated by the Fenton reaction induced large-scale oxidative modification of Cys, and redox proteomics identified a total of 1192 differential oxidation sites (Dos), 59 Dos were located in the MPs structure. The Cys of actin (17 Dos), myosin/myomesin (16 Dos), tenascin (12 Dos) and sarcomere (10 Dos) in the MPs structure showed active oxidative modification behavior towards ·OH, especially with the "-C-X-X-X-X-W-" structure amino acid sequence showed high sensitivity.

Purpose: To elucidate the mechanical properties of the bovine lens cortical membrane (CM), the nuclear membrane (NM) containing cholesterol bilayer domains (CBDs), and whole bovine lenses.

Methods: The total lipids (lipids plus cholesterol) from the cortex and nucleus of a single bovine lens were isolated using the monophasic methanol extraction method. Supported CMs and NMs were prepared from total lipids extracted from the cortex and nucleus, respectively, using a rapid solvent exchange method and probe-tip sonication, followed by the fusion of unilamellar vesicles on a flat, freshly cleaved mica surface.
