Background: Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a congenital defect between the atria, resulting in abnormal hemodynamics. We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify common genetic variants associated with PFO.
Methods: We performed a whole genome sequencing in a discovery cohort of 3,227 unrelated Chinese participants screened for PFO via contrast transthoracic echocardiography (cTTE).

Background: Plasma exchange (PE) removes high-molecular-weight substances and is sometimes used for antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis (AAV) with alveolar hemorrhage. Hypotension during PE is rare, except in allergic cases. We report a case of shock likely caused by increased pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) during PE.

Functional mitral regurgitation is characterized by normal structures of the mitral valve and chordae tendinea, but the regurgitation occurs due to geometric changes in the left atrium and left ventricle. This condition can contribute to heart failure progression and lead to a poor prognosis. Functional mitral regurgitation is found in approximately one-third of patients with heart failure with a decreased ejection fraction.

Cirrhotic cardiomyopathy (CCM) is a diagnostic entity defined as cardiac dysfunction (diastolic and/or systolic) in patients with liver cirrhosis, in the absence of overt cardiac disorder. Pathogenically, CCM stems from a combination of systemic and local hepatic factors that, through hemodynamic and neurohormonal changes, affect the balance of cardiac function and lead to its remodeling. Vascular changes in cirrhosis, mostly driven by portal hypertension, splanchnic vasodilatation, and increased cardiac output alongside maladaptively upregulated feedback systems, lead to fluid accumulation, venostasis, and cardiac dysfunction.
