Acute lung injury is characterized by accumulation of neutrophils in the lungs, accompanied by the development of interstitial edema and an intense inflammatory response. To assess the role of neutrophils as early immune effectors in hemorrhage- or endotoxemia-induced lung injury, mice were made neutropenic with cyclophosphamide or anti-neutrophil antibodies. Endotoxemia- or hemorrhage-induced lung edema was significantly reduced in neutropenic animals.

The respiratory, renal, hematologic, and serum biochemical effects of hypertonic saline solution (HSS) treatment were examined in 12 endotoxic, pentobarbital-anesthetized calves (8 to 20 days old). Escherichia coli endotoxin (055:B5) was infused IV at a rate of 0.1 microgram/kg of body weight over 30 minutes.

An autopsy case with endotoxemia-induced diffuse myelitis and extensive, grossly patchy necrosis of the liver occurring in a 70-year-old female was examined histopathologically and electron microscopically. Leucopenia with prominent leukemoid reaction (myeloblasts 20%) preceded the terminal fulminant hepatitis by two weeks. Soon after the terminal event, bacteremia and endotoxemia were detected and negativity for HB antigen was proved.
