Glycosylation of haemoglobin was evaluated in 30 normal adult Nigerians and 60 diabetic adult Nigerians who were at various stages of blood glucose control, by measuring ketoamine-linked hexoses in haemoglobin. These hexoses were converted by digestion with 1 M oxalic acid for 4.5 h at 100 degrees C to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, which was measured by reaction with 2 thiobarbituric acid. Glycosylation of haemoglobin was expressed as micromoles (mumol) of fructose per 5% haemoglobin. A mean fructose concentration of 91.0 mumol/1 (s.d. +/- 9.3) was obtained for normal subjects; that for diabetic adult Nigerians was 175.3 mumol/l (s.d. +/- 26.4). There was significant correlation between fasting blood glucose levels and glycosylated haemoglobins in both normal adults (r = 0.77, P less than 0.001) and diabetic adults (r = 0.90, P less than 0.001). The colorimetric method was found to be precise and accurate with an interassay variability of 1.44% and an intra-assay variability of 0.98%.

Background: The mortality from breast cancer (BC) is still high in Nigeria and other low-and medium-income countries (LMICs) especially among adolescents and young adults. This is partly due to late presentation for diagnosis and treatment. It is recommended that to optimize the effectiveness of treatment, the total time which is the interval from symptom onset to initiation of treatment, should be less than 90 days as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Background: Despite assumptions that insurance coverage would boost oral healthcare utilization in Nigeria, there is insufficient evidence supporting this claim. This study investigates the associations between residential location, awareness of the oral health insurance scheme, history of dental service utilization, and acceptance of oral health insurance among individuals benefiting from the Ilera Eko Scheme; a scheme that integrates preventive and curative oral health care into the state health insurance scheme.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted from July to November 2023 recruiting from a database of 1520 enrollees aged of 18 and 72-years-old who had been on the scheme for at least three months.

Background: Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is already being adopted for the surveillance of health conditions of communities and shows great potential for the monitoring of infectious pathogens of public health importance. There is however paucity of robust data to support extensive WBE in Nigeria. This study evaluated the prevalence of clinically relevant infectious pathogens and provided antimicrobial resistance profiles of bacteria pathogens in wastewater canals in Lagos State at a single point in time.

Background: In October 2021, a large outbreak of cholera was declared in Cameroon, disproportionately affecting the Southwest region, one of 10 administrative regions in the country. In this region, the cases were concentrated in three major cities where a humanitarian crisis had concomitantly led to an influx of internally displaced persons. Meanwhile, across the border, Nigeria was facing an unprecedented cholera outbreak.

Gunshot injuries (GSI) are a major global public health problem. Our objective was to determine the patient characteristics, pattern and outcome of civilian gunshot wounds at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria, from 2014-2018. The data of 232 patients with a diagnosis of GSI during the study period were collected and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics.
