Endocrine function was evaluated in 20 prepubertal patients with homozygous beta-thalassemia treated with frequent transfusions and long term iron chelation therapy. FSH, LH, PRL, and TSH secretion were evaluated by LRH and TRH testing and L-dopa and ACTH were used to assess GH and adrenocortical reserve. No statistically significant differences were found between FSH, LH, PRL, GH, and cortisol secretion in the patients and in normal subjects. There was a relatively high incidence (35%) of primary thyroid impairment since 1 patient had primary hypothyroidism and 6 others had evidence of subclinical hypothyroidism as manifested by increased TSH responses to TRH. However, no statistically significant correlations were found between either serum ferritin levels, total blood transfusions received, and thyroid function.

Article Synopsis
  • Testicular tissue freezing is a method for preserving male fertility in infertile patients and prepubertal boys needing radiotherapy, but the freezing process can cause oxidative stress and tissue damage.
  • Procyanidin B2 (PCB2), a natural compound with antioxidant properties, shows promise in protecting testicular tissue from damage during freezing by reducing oxidative stress and apoptosis.
  • The study found that PCB2 improves cell viability, structural organization of testicular tissue, and activates protective signaling pathways, suggesting it could be a valuable addition to the freezing process for better fertility preservation.

Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Faculdade de Odontologia, Departamento de Patologia e Diagnóstico Oral (Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil).

Introduction: The early diagnosis of mandibular asymmetry (MA) in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) can contribute to its treatment.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence and the extent of MA in UCLP patients at different growth stages.

Methods: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) of 47 UCLP patients were included, and divided into two groups (prepubertal stage and pubertal stage).

Harnessing the potential of tissue engineering to target male infertility: Insights into testicular regeneration.

Tissue Cell

December 2024

Pediatric Urology and Regenerative Medicine Research Center, Gene Cell Tissue Research Institute, Children's Medical Center, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran. Electronic address:

Male infertility is among one of the most challenging health concerns in the world. Traditional therapeutic interventions such as semen and testicular tissue cryopreservation aim to restore or preserve male fertility. However, these methods are subject to limitations that impact their efficacy and are infeasible in cases such as patients who cannot produce mature sperm due to genetic or pathological disorders.
