The article presents an analysis of the history of the microbiology course delivered during the inaugural operational year of the Institut Pasteur in Paris. The year 1889 is examined through the lens of three hitherto unknown volumes that bring together the microbiology lectures delivered at the end of the 19th century. The course was entirely independent from the teaching provided by the universities or faculties of medicine and rapidly gained international recognition.

Phenol and p-cresol are two common toxic small molecules related to various diseases. Existing reports confirmed that high -tyrosine in the daily diet can increase the concentration of phenolic compounds in blood and urine. L-tyrosine is a common component of protein-rich foods.

At the end of his professorial mandate at the Val de Grâce hospital, Alphonse Laveran, who was Chief Doctor, was appointed to Lille and then Nantes. These assignments however deprived him of a hospital service where he could carry on his research. In 1896, faced with the inflexibility of his military hierarchy, he applied for early retirement; he was then 50 years old.

The alarming symptoms attributed to several potent clostridial toxins enabled the early identification of the causative agent of tetanus, botulism, and gas gangrene diseases, which belongs to the most famous species of pathogenic clostridia. Although was identified early in the 20th century as producing important toxins, it was identified only 40 years later as the causative agent of important nosocomial diseases upon the advent of antibiotic therapies in hospital settings. Today, is a leading public health issue, as it is the major cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea in adults.
