The major genetic models of carcinogenesis are critically reviewed to determine their validity and relevance for clinical and experimental oncologists. Of major concern are the "two-hit" theory of Knudson and the host resistance system of Matsunaga. These models may be used to explain the pathobiologic peculiarities of human neoplasms, particularly those occurring in early life. It is proposed that certain benign and regressive tumors encountered in early life are expressions of the activity of the host resistance system.

Species identification of botanical products is a crucial aspect of research and regulatory compliance; however, botanical classification can be difficult, especially for morphologically similar species with overlapping genetic and metabolomic markers, like those in the genus Ocimum. Untargeted LC-MS metabolomics coupled with multivariate predictive modeling provides a potential avenue for improving herbal identity investigations, but the current dearth of reference materials for many botanicals limits the applicability of these approaches. This study investigated the potential of using greenhouse-grown authentic Ocimum to build predictive models for classifying commercially available Ocimum products.

Background: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the most common genetic cardiomyopathy and causes major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). SVEP1 (Sushi, von Willebrand factor type A, epidermal growth factor, and pentraxin domain containing 1) is a large extracellular matrix protein that is detectable in the plasma. However, it is unknown whether adding plasma SVEP1 levels to clinical predictors including NT-proBNP (N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide) improves the prognostication in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Social behaviour traits and their impact on feed efficiency are of particular interest in pig farming. The integration of automatic feeders enables the collection of multiple phenotypes for breeding purposes. The additive genetic and social genetic effect can be estimated considering all the visits to the feeder by modelling each visit independently in a 'visit-based approach'.

While many genetic tools exist for zebrafish, this animal model still lacks robust gene-silencing and microRNA-delivery technologies enabling spatio-temporal control and traceability. We have recently demonstrated that engineered pri-miR backbones can trigger stable gene knockdown and/or express microRNA(s) of choice in this organism. However, this miRNA-expressing technology presents important limitations.

Background: Orthotopic murine models of pancreatic cancer represent an important tool for evaluating treatment strategies. Several genetically modified mouse tumors and xenograft models have been reported. Genetic models have unpredictable growth and variable waiting period, while orthotopic models are operative ones, difficult to create and result in irregular metastasis.
