The following members of the Herpetoviridae family were tested to determine their sensitivities to the new antiviral drug, BIOLF-62: equine herpesvirus types 1 and 3, human herpesvirus types 1 and 2, swine herpesvirus, bovine herpesvirus type 4, feline herpesvirus, canine herpesvirus, and herpes simiae virus. Equine herpesviruses 1 and 3, human herpesviruses 1 and 2, and herpes simiae virus were all sensitive to BIOLF-62 at concentrations of less than 0.55 micrograms/ml. Equine herpesvirus types 1 and 3 were particularly sensitive, viral median effective dose (ED50) concentrations of the drug being only 0.033 and 0.16 micrograms/ml, respectively. Such high antiviral potency and low cell toxicity indicate that BIOLF-62 might be useful in the treatment of infected animals.

Cytomegaloviruses, species-specific members of the betaherpesviruses, encode an impressive array of immune evasion strategies committed to the manipulation of the host immune system enabling these viruses to remain for life in a stand-off with host innate and adaptive immune mechanisms. Even though they are species-restricted, cytomegaloviruses are distributed across a wide range of different mammalian species in which they cause systemic infection involving many different cell types. Regulated, or programmed cell death has a recognized potential to eliminate infected cells prior to completion of viral replication and release of progeny.

microRNAs (miRNAs) are central post-transcriptional gene expression regulators in healthy and diseased states. Despite decades of effort, deciphering miRNA targets remains challenging, leading to an incomplete miRNA interactome and partially elucidated miRNA functions. Here, we introduce microT-CNN, an avant-garde deep convolutional neural network model that moves the needle by integrating hundreds of tissue-matched (in-)direct experiments from 26 distinct cell types, corresponding to a unique training and evaluation set of >60 000 miRNA binding events and ~30 000 unique miRNA-gene target pairs.

Periodontitis is the inflammation of the supporting structures around the dentition. Several microbial agents, mostly bacteria, have been identified as causative factors for periodontal disease. On the other hand, oral cavity is a rich reservoir for viruses since it contains a wide variety of cell types that can be targeted by viruses.

Purpose: To examine the clinical utility of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) in individuals with early pulmonary infection following liver transplantation.
Patients And Methods: mNGS and traditional detection results were retrospectively collected from 99 patients with pulmonary infection within one week following liver transplantation. These patients were admitted to the Department of Critical Liver Diseases at Beijing Friendship Hospital from February 2022 to February 2024, along with their general clinical data.

Background: There is an increasing awareness that aging of the immune system, or immunosenescence, is a key biological process underlying many of the hallmark diseases of aging and age-related decline broadly. While immunosenescence can be in part due to normal age-related changes in the immune system, emerging evidence posits that viral infections may be biological stressors of the immune system that accelerate the pace of immunosenescence.
Methods: We used a convenience sample of 42 individuals aged 65 years and older to examine correlations between antiviral immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels for 4 human herpesviruses (cytomegalovirus [CMV], herpes simplex virus [types 1 and 2], and Epstein-Barr virus) and multiple indicators of T-cell immunosenescence.
