Different human and nonhuman cells were assayed for their capacity to absorb human cytomegalovirus (CMV Ad.169) and to support CMV infection in vitro. The CMV adsorptive capacity was assayed by measuring cell-bound radioactivity after addition of purified 3H- or 125I-labeled CMV or by a bioassay for residual infectious virus in the supernatant fluid. Many of the human and nonhuman cell types adsorbed CMV. Induction of CMV early nuclear antigens in the same cells was assayed by anticomplement immunofluorescence staining of fixed cells 1-3 days after infection. CMV early antigens were induced in the human and nonhuman cells that showed a high degree of CMV adsorption.

Preclinical and clinical xenotransplantation trials have shown that successful outcomes depend on a number of factors including the prevention of xenozoonoses. Preclinical trials involving pig kidneys and hearts transplanted into various non-human primates have revealed the potential impact of pig pathogens being present in the transplanted organ/tissue, mainly viruses. The concept of "designated pathogen-free donor animals" was developed to ensure elimination of pathogens during the breeding of donor animals to mitigate this occurrence.

Buprenorphine is an agonist at the mu opioid receptor (MOR) and antagonist at the kappa (KOR) and delta (DOR) receptors and a nociceptin receptor (NOR) ligand. Buprenorphine has a relatively low intrinsic efficacy for G-proteins and a long brain and MOR dwell time. Buprenorphine ceiling on respiratory depression has theoretically been related multiple factors such as low intrinsic efficacy at MOR, binding to six-transmembrane MOR and interactions in MOR/NOR heterodimers.
