Chemiluminescence can be used to identify defects in the oxidative metabolism of granulocytes. This procedure has recently been adopted for use with microliter quantities of whole blood, appropriate for prenatal or neonatal study. Although the contribution of myeloperoxidase to the chemiluminescence assay has been noted, the possible diagnostic confusion between chronic granulomatous disease of childhood (which is rare and severe) and myeloperoxidase deficiency (which is common and of little clinical consequence) has not been stressed. We report a father and his infant daughter whose cells emitted no light in the luminol-enhanced luminescence assay; both patients are totally peroxidase deficient. These results emphasize the hereditary nature of myeloperoxidase deficiency, and the possibility for erroneous diagnosis of chronic granulomatous disease of childhood based on the luminol-enhanced luminescence test.

Previous research has demonstrated that a combined magnetic field (CMF) plays a critical role in modifying the properties of aqueous solutions, leading to an increase in the luminol-enhanced chemiluminescence of neutrophils. Using this model, the distant interaction between aqueous solutions was demonstrated, and the role of a CMF in the regulation of this phenomenon was established. In the current study, highly diluted (HD) phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) solution (the donor) was incubated with aqueous ethanol (the acceptor), both in a CMF-generating device and under geomagnetic field (GMF), for 0, 20, and 60 min.

Strenuous exercise alters the oxidative response of blood phagocytes to various agonists. However, little is known about spontaneous post exercise oxidant production by these cells. In this cross-over trial, we tested whether an exhaustive treadmill run at a speed corresponding to 70% of VO2max affects spontaneous and fMLP-provoked oxidant production by phagocytes in 18 amateur sportsmen.

Herein, a facile self-assembly through adenosine monophosphate (AMP) and luminol with Tb was employed to construct a dual-ligand coordinated AMP-Tb-luminol coordination polymers (CPs), which emitted the typical fluorescence of luminol. Based on the sensitization effect of ciprofloxacin (CIP) on the luminescence of Tb, a ratiometric sensor was fabricated using the fluorescence of luminol as an inert reference. The fluorescent intensity ratios of Tb to that of luminol enhanced linearly with the CIP concentration in the range from 5 nM to 2.

Cellular responses to implanted biomaterials are key to understanding osseointegration. The aim of this investigation was to determine the priming and activation of the respiratory burst activity of monocytes in response to surface-modified titanium. Human peripheral blood monocytes of healthy blood donors were separated, then incubated with surface-modified grade 2 commercially pure titanium (CPT) disks with a range of known surface energies and surface roughness for 30- or 60-min.
