A rotavirus-like agent was detected in the feces of a child with diarrhea. Although morphologically indistinguishable from rotavirus, the agent was serologically distinct, and electrophoresis of its nucleic acid also showed that it was dissimilar.

Our objective was to evaluate the efficacy of bovine rotavirus antigen-specific passive antibody for reducing the duration of diarrhea induced by oral challenge with bovine rotavirus in a neonatal calf model. The bovine rotavirus-specific passive antibodies were produced before the study by hyperimmunization of pregnant cows during the dry period with an adjuvanted vaccine containing recombinantly-expressed rotavirus virus-like particles. Eighty-three calves were cleanly collected at birth and randomly assigned to 1 of 3 groups as follows: (1) control group that was colostrum deprived and fed milk replacer for first feeding, (2) group that was colostrum deprived and fed milk replacer mixed with antirotavirus antibodies for first feeding, or (3) group that was fed colostrum replacer mixed with antirotavirus antibodies and a product approved by the US Department of Agriculture containing antibodies against Escherichia coli K99 and bovine coronavirus for first feeding.

Apoptosis is a major problem in animal cell culture during production of biopharmaceuticals, such as recombinant proteins or viral particles. In the present work baculovirus-insect cell expression system (BEVS/IC) is used as model to produce rotavirus like-particles, composed by three layers of three different viral proteins (VP2, VP6 and VP7). In this model baculovirus infection also induces host cell death.

Virus-like particles constitute potentially relevant vaccine candidates. Nevertheless, their behavior in vitro and assembly process needs to be understood in order to improve their yield and quality. In this study we aimed at addressing these issues and for that purpose triple- and double-layered rotavirus-like particles (TLP 2/6/7 and DLP 2/6, respectively) size and zeta potential were measured using dynamic light scattering at different physicochemical conditions, namely pH, ionic strength, and temperature.

Group A and group B rotaviruses are important diarrhea causing agents among calves and buffalo calves. Epidemiological studies in Indian calves revealed the predominance of group A rotavirus strains with G6, G8, and G10 specificity and group B rotaviruses. A total of 95 fecal samples were collected from calves and buffalo calves affected with diarrhea from an unorganized cattle farm and two cattle markets in and around Kolkata, in the state of West Bengal of Eastern India.
