Biopsy specimens from nasopharyngeal carcinomas (NPC) or salivary-gland carcinomas (SGC) in Greenland Eskimoes were examined for the presence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNA and sera from the patients were tested for EBV-specific antibody titres. Six out of 7 NPCs and one from an undifferentiated SGG were positive for EBV DNA. The EBV-specific antibody spectra and titres of the patients with NPC or undifferentiated SGG conformed to the results of earlier studies in other high-incidence areas.

Background: Self-reported health problems following severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection are common and often include relatively non-specific complaints such as fatigue, exertional dyspnoea, concentration or memory disturbance and sleep problems. The long-term prognosis of such post-acute sequelae of COVID-19/post-COVID-19 syndrome (PCS) is unknown, and data finding and correlating organ dysfunction and pathology with self-reported symptoms in patients with non-recovery from PCS is scarce. We wanted to describe clinical characteristics and diagnostic findings among patients with PCS persisting for >1 year and assessed risk factors for PCS persistence versus improvement.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) establishes persistent infection, causes infectious mononucleosis, is a major trigger for multiple sclerosis and contributes to multiple cancers. Yet, knowledge remains incomplete about how the virus remodels host B cells to support lytic replication. Rapid and sensitive detection of Epstein-Barr virus cell-free DNA (EBV cfDNA) is crucial for early diagnosis and monitoring of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), but accessibility to screening is limited by complicated and costly conventional DNA isolation and purification approaches. Here, a fully integrated ion concentration polarization (ICP)-enriched and nanozyme-catalyzed lateral flow assay (ICP-cLFA) is developed, enabling total analysis of EBV cfDNA in whole blood samples, with DNA isolation, pre-concentration, and amplification performed on a microfluidic chip, consequently providing the signal readout within 75 min. Specifically, ICP preconcentration and amplification steps, together with target recognition catalyzed by a platinum-decorated mesoporous gold nanosphere (MGNS@Pt) nanozyme, result in an ultralow detection limit of 4 aM in standard cfDNA samples and 100 aM in whole blood from NPC-bearing rats.
