The homeobox (HOX) family has shown potential in adipose development and function, yet the specific HOX proteins fueling adipose thermogenesis remain elusive. In this study, we uncovered the novel function of HOXC4 in stimulating adipose thermogenesis. Our bioinformatic analysis indicated an enrichment of Hoxc4 co-expressed genes in metabolic pathways and linked HOXC4 polymorphisms to metabolic parameters, suggesting its involvement in metabolic regulation.

Plant-based dietary patterns have been demonstrated to reduce the risk of non-communicable disease (NCD), including cardiovascular disease (CVD), type 2 diabetes, cancer, and all-cause mortality. Phenolic compounds (PC), abundant in plant-based foods, have been considered as instrumental in this attenuation of NCD risk. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a heterogeneous tumor associated with several risk factors, with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) emerging as an important cause of liver tumorigenesis. Due to the obesity epidemics, the occurrence of NAFLD has significantly increased with nearly 30% prevalence worldwide. HCC often arises in the background of chronic liver disease (CLD), such as nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and cirrhosis.

Background: Although little is yet known about the long-term maintenance of very low-energy ketogenic therapy (VLEKT) effects on body composition, muscle strength and inflammation, it is plausible to assume that changes may occur, particularly during the steps following the ketogenic step, due to the loss of the protective effects of ketones and the concomitant reintroduction of carbohydrates. For this reason, the present study aimed to evaluate the effects of supplementation with 8 g per day of essential amino acids (EAAs) on these parameters.
Methods: A total of 68 women of reproductive age and with grade I obesity who had completed 45 days of the ketogenic phase with VLEKT (KeNuT protocol) and 40 days of non-ketogenic phase of KeNuT protocol with VLEKT (phase 3, fruit reintroduction) were included in the study.

Recent Finding: Obesity is a significant risk factor for numerous chronic conditions like cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes. As excess energy intake is considered by some to be the primary driver of weight gain, tremendous collective effort should be directed toward reducing excessive feeding at the individual and population levels.
