AI Article Synopsis

  • Five cases of xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis were reported, with initial suspicion of Wilms's tumor in two cases.
  • During surgery, three cases had findings that confirmed the presence of a renal tumor.
  • The diagnosis is made through a pathological examination, the condition is typically found in one kidney only, and nephrectomy (removal of the kidney) effectively cures it.

Article Abstract

Five cases of xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis are described. Wilms's tumour was suspected preoperatively in 2 of the cases and a renal tumour appeared to be confirmed at laparotomy in three. Pathological examination is diagnostic and the condition appears to be always unilateral. Nephrectomy is curative.

Septic cardiomyopathy (SCM) is a reversible cardiac dysfunction occurring in patients with sepsis or septic shock, characterized by transient impaired myocardial contractility. Despite its prevalence in severe sepsis and significant impact on patient outcomes, SCM remains underdiagnosed and is one of the least studied forms of cardiomyopathy. Its recognition and management are further complicated by the absence of a universally accepted consensus on its diagnostic criteria and definition.

Introduction: Laparoscopic simple nephrectomy (LSNx) is among the gold standard options for management of selected poorly functioning and most non-functioning kidneys (PFK/NFKs). Our objective was to audit our patients who had undergone LSNx for benign causes and assess their perioperative outcomes and analyse the factors correlating with these outcomes.

Materials And Methods: We reviewed our prospectively collected data of patients with PFK/NFKs due to benign causes who underwent a LSNx on a three-dimensional (3D) system via a transperitoneal approach between January 2017 and June 2023.

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis is a rare condition in paediatric patients, mostly described in middle-aged female patients. We present a 7-year-old female with juvenile idiopathic arthritis, who was found to have a kidney mass with a concurrent Escherichia coli urinary tract infection. Surgical excision was done out of concern for possible malignancy.
