Affinity of beta-adrenoreceptors in the rat brain synaptic membranes to agonists isoproterenol and norepinephrine, as well as to antagonist 125I-hydroxybenzylpindolol is lower in young (1 month) and old (24--26 months) than in mature (8--12 months) rats. Desensitization toward isoproterenol is expressed in the young ones only. In the old but not in other groups simultaneous action of isoproterenol and N-ethylmaleimide decreases the following binding of the antagonist while the same agents added separately produced no effect. It is suggested that beta-adrenoreceptors undergo age-related changes in their conformational state due to modification of the membrane environment.

The role of beta-adrenoreceptors in postoperative ileus in rats.

Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Medicine, Medical University of Gdańsk, Dębowa Str. 23, 80-204, Gdańsk, Poland.

Article Synopsis
  • The research aimed to assess how specific beta-adrenergic receptor antagonists affect bowel motility following abdominal surgery in a rat model of postoperative ileus.
  • Male rats underwent surgical procedures, and their bowel motility was measured by tracking the transit of Evans blue dye, with various adrenergic blockers administered beforehand.
  • Results showed that propranolol improved bowel motility at certain doses, whereas other selective adrenergic antagonists did not have a significant effect, suggesting the benefit of propranolol may stem from its membrane-stabilizing properties rather than its receptor-blocking effects.

Vanadium-dependent activation of glucose transport in adipocytes by catecholamines is not mediated adrenoceptor stimulation or monoamine oxidase activity.

World J Diabetes

December 2020

Institut des Maladies Métaboliques et Cardiovasculaires, Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale, INSERM UMR1048, Université Paul Sabatier Toulouse III, Toulouse 31432, France.

Background: Benzylamine and methylamine activate glucose uptake in adipocytes. For tyramine, this effect has even been extended to cardiomyocytes.

Aim: To investigate the effects of catecholamines and other amines on glucose uptake.

This study investigated the hypothesis that β-adrenoreceptor-mediated inhibition of sympathetic vasoconstriction would be enhanced in female compared with male rats, and that endurance exercise training would augment β-adrenoreceptor-mediated inhibition of sympathetic vasoconstriction in male and female rats. Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into sedentary (male: = 7; female: = 8) and exercise-trained (male: = 9; female: = 9) groups. Following 4 wk of exercise training or being sedentary, rats were anesthetized and surgically instrumented for stimulation of the lumbar sympathetic chain, muscle contraction and measurement of arterial blood pressure and femoral artery blood flow (FBF).

In rats with estradiol valerate-induced polycystic ovary syndrome, the acute blockade of ovarian β-adrenoreceptors improve ovulation.

Reprod Biol Endocrinol

November 2019

Biology of Reproduction Research Unit, Physiology of Reproduction Laboratory, Facultad de Estudios Superiores Zaragoza, UNAM, AP 9-020, CP, 15000, México, DF, Mexico.

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome is characterized by hyperactivity of the ovarian sympathetic nervous system, increases in the content and release of norepinephrine, as well as decreases in the number of β-adrenoreceptors. In the present study, β-adrenoreceptors in the ovaries of rats with polycystic ovary syndrome were blocked and analyzed the resultant effects on ovulation, hormone secretion and the enzymes responsible for the synthesis of catecholamines.

Methods: At 60 days of age, vehicle or estradiol valerate-treated rats were injected with propranolol [10 M] into the ovarian bursas on oestrus day.

Extinction is the learned inhibition of retrieval of a previously acquired memory and is a major component of exposure therapy, which has attracted much attention because of the use in the treatment of drug addiction, phobias and particularly fear disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Exposure to a novel environment before or after extinction training can enhance the extinction of contextual fear conditioning, however the cellular and molecular substrates are still unclear. Here, we investigated the participation of H2-histaminergic, β-adrenergic and 5-HT-serotonergic receptors of the hippocampus on the enhancement of extinction memory caused by novelty.
