Rats fed a diet low in fibre and provided with ethanol for 4 weeks showed a higher concentration of cholesterol in the serum, liver and heart, but not in the aorta when compared with control rats not provided with ethanol. Animals maintained on a diet of blackgram fibre (30%) and provided with ethanol had significantly lower concentration of cholesterol in these tissues and in the aorta. The concentration of triglyceride was also raised in the serum, liver and heart in rats fed a diet low in fibre + ethanol. A diet of blackgram fibre caused a significant decrease in serum and liver triglyceride. Fecal excretion of neutral sterols and bile acids decreased in rats fed a diet low in fibre + ethanol, whereas blackgram fibre caused an increase in such fecal excretion.

Wheat pasta has a compact structure built by a gluten network entrapping starch granules resulting in a low glycemic index, but is nevertheless unsuitable for gluten-intolerant people. High protein gluten-free legume flours, rich in fibers, resistant starch and minerals are thus a good alternative for gluten-free pasta production. In this study, gluten-free pasta was produced exclusively from faba, lentil or black-gram flours.

The effect of the administration of blackgram fiber (Phaseolus mungo) on the metabolism of carbohydrates was studied in rats fed 30% NDF (neutral detergent fiber) diet. The experimental group showed a significant increase in liver glycogen level and a significant decrease in blood glucose. Significant increases in the activities of glycogen phosphorylase, hexokinase, fructose-1, 6-diphosphatase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and isocitrate dehydrogenase were observed in the experimental group.

Impact of biologically treated domestic sewage water was studied on the growth and yield attributing characters of wheat and blackgram under different fertilizer levels in the field condition. There was no significant difference on the yield and yield attributing characters of wheat. However, yield attributing characters like number of tillers/plant, panicle length (cm), number of grains/panicle and 1,000 grain weight showed increasing trend to the tune of 13.

The present investigation was carried out to study the hypolipidemic effect of dietary fibre from cornbran and blackgram seedcoat in rats. Isoproteinous diet having one percent cholesterol and ten percent dietary fibre from cornbran and blackgram seedcoat was fed to four groups of albino rats for six weeks. With consumption of both the grain husks, total lipids, cholesterol and tryglycerides were lowered while HDL-cholesterol was found to be significantly increased.
