A live-virus embryo-propagated canary pox vaccine was developed that can be safely and effectively applied by a single needle wing-web stab. Reactions to vaccination with passages lower than the 72nd passage were sometimes excessive in proliferative response. The 72nd and 100th embryo passages produced a more restricted lesion at the site of inoculation. The vaccine does not cause a systemic reaction or metastasis from the inoculation site.

Avipoxviruses have been recognised as significant pathogens in the conservation of numerous bird species. However, the vast majority of the avipoxviruses that infect wild birds remain uncharacterised. Here, we characterise a novel avipoxvirus, mudlarkpox virus (MLPV) isolated from an Australian passerine bird, mudlark (Grallina cyanoleuca).

Outbreak of Systemic Avian Pox in Canaries () Associated with the B1 Subgroup of Avian Pox Viruses.

Avian Dis

September 2019

Department of Avian Medicine and Poultry Husbandry, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Production, National Autonomous University of Mexico, University City, Coyoacan 04510, Mexico City, Mexico,

This study reports an outbreak of avian pox in a quarantine of canaries imported from Europe, with a mortality of 30% and clinical signs of dyspnea and blepharoconjunctivitis. During necropsy, beak cyanosis, serous blepharitis, caseous sinusitis, oropharyngitis, tracheitis, pulmonary edema, pneumonia, fibrinous airsacculitis, and splenomegaly were observed. Microscopically, edema, epithelial hyperplasia, hydropic degeneration, and vacuolated eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies were found; similar lesions were observed in the thymus, spleen, and other organs.

This study evaluated the safety of and humoral response to the Merial Recombitek recombinant canine distemper virus (rCDV) vaccine in maned wolves ( = 9, age 2-9 yr). All maned wolves had prior history of annual vaccination with the Merial Purevax ferret rCDV vaccine. Serum neutralization (SN) to CDV was measured prior to initial vaccination with the rCDV Recombitek vaccine followed by a booster vaccination at 4-6 wk.

Avipoxviruses are significant pathogens infecting a wide range of wild and domestic bird species globally. Here, we describe a novel genome sequence of magpiepox virus (MPPV) isolated from an Australian magpie. In the present study, histopathologically confirmed cutaneous pox lesions were used for transmission electron microscopic analysis, which demonstrated brick-shaped virions with regular spaced thread-like ridges, indicative of likely infectious particles.

A flow cytometric granularity assay for the quantification of infectious virus.

Vaccine

November 2019

Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario N2L3G1, Canada. Electronic address:

A flow cytometry-based assay was developed to assess the infective titer of two recombinant viruses: a recombinant herpes simplex type 2 (rHSV-2) and a recombinant canary pox (rALVAC.gfp). This method uses granularity of infected Vero and QT-35 cells, respectively, and correlates this to the infectious titer of virus samples.
