The genesis of unusual radiographic shadows by bronchi filled with tumor cells is reported. These shadows, similar to those caused by mucus or pus, are rod-like and indicate the replacement of air by water dense materials. The unifying term, "bronchial cast shadow" is proposed as the radiographic diagnostic sign.

A man in his 60s, who had undergone surgery for rectal cancer, liver metastases, and lung metastasis, had a past history of myocardial infarction and ventricular fibrillation with reduced cardiac functions. He was referred to our department because of a pulmonary nodule shadow in the S2 right upper lobe and a bronchial cast shadow along the B2 bronchus. Robot-assisted thoracoscopic right S2 segmentectomy was performed and intraoperative bronchoscopy revealed a polyp-like tumor within B2a.

The present study aimed to provide comprehensive morphological features of the bronchial and parabronchial systems using cast, histological, histochemical, and scanning electron microscopy techniques, with new insights into the parabronchial topographic distribution system on 22 white Pekin ducks. Casting illustrated that the medioventral secondary bronchi (MVSB) were the largest, but the posterior (POSB) ones were the smallest. The primary (PB) and secondary bronchi (SB) were lined with thin pseudostratified, ciliated columnar epithelium.

Plastic bronchitis is rare in adult pulmonology and has a wide range of aetiology. Cast analysis is key in narrowing down the differential diagnosis of plastic bronchitis. If suspected of having lymphocytic PB, complete imaging to evaluate thoracic lymphatics is important to find out the potential causes for PB.

Plastic bronchitis is a relatively uncommon illness that has been reported in all age groups. This case report describes a specific manifestation of plastic bronchitis in two pediatric brothers influenced by both smoke inhalation and influenza A virus infection. The therapeutic approach mainly involved symptomatic supportive care, antiviral therapy, repeated bronchoscopic alveolar lavage, and bronchial cast removal.

Loss of CFTR Reverses Senescence Hallmarks in SARS-CoV-2 Infected Bronchial Epithelial Cells.

Anatomy and Histology Section, Department of Neurosciences, Biomedicine and Movement Sciences, University of Verona, 37134 Verona, Italy.

SARS-CoV-2 infection has been recently shown to induce cellular senescence in vivo. A senescence-like phenotype has been reported in cystic fibrosis (CF) cellular models. Since the previously published data highlighted a low impact of SARS-CoV-2 on CFTR-defective cells, here we aimed to investigate the senescence hallmarks in SARS-CoV-2 infection in the context of a loss of CFTR expression/function.
