Equine Vet J

January 2025

Department of Large Animal Diseases and Clinic, Institute of Veterinary Medicine, Warsaw University of Life Sciences (WULS - SGGW), Warsaw, Poland.

Background: The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a unique joint that enables mandibular movement. Temporomandibular diseases (TMDs) impair joint function, leading to more or less specific clinical signs.

: With technological advancements, virtual versions of the Box and Block Test (BBT) employing the Leap Motion Controller have been developed for evaluating hand dexterity. Currently, there are no studies about the usefulness of this system in children with unilateral cerebral palsy (UCP). Thus, our main objective is to apply a virtual BBT based on the Leap Motion Controller in children with UCP compared with the real BTT for assessing upper limb function within a pilot study.

Despite the high incidence of bladder cancer (it represents the 7th most common cancer in males), EAU guidelines do not recommend any technique for screening and prevention, whereas the main diagnostic tools remain computed tomography urography (CTU), cytology, and cystoscopy. Unfortunately, these gold-standard modalities are mainly characterized by low sensitivity and accuracy. To minimize the limitations and increase the detection rates of urothelial cancer, several technologies have been developed.

Echocardiography is the main modality in diagnosing acquired and congenital heart disease (CHD) in fetal and pediatric patients. However, operator variability, complex image interpretation, and lack of experienced sonographers and cardiologists in certain regions are the main limitations existing in fetal and pediatric echocardiography. Advances in artificial intelligence (AI), including machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL), offer significant potential to overcome these challenges by automating image acquisition, image segmentation, CHD detection, and measurements.

Investigating amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides in solution is essential during the initial stages of developing lead compounds that can influence Aβ fibrillation while the peptide is still in a soluble state. The tendency of the Aβ(1-42) peptide to misfold in solution, correlated to the aetiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD), is one of the main hindrances to characterising its aggregation kinetics in a cell-mimetic environment. Moreover, the Aβ(1-42) aggregation triggers the unfolded protein response (UPR) in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), leading to cellular dysfunction and multiple cell death modalities, exacerbated by reactive oxygen species (ROS), which damage cellular components and trigger inflammation.
