An extension of the theory of the "fixed charge" controlled "membrane oscillator" is used for simulation of a variety of excitability phenomena in nerves, presso-receptors, smooth muscle and the heart. A central issue is the prediction of water movements across the cell membrane resulting in "swelling" and "shrinkage". The presented "electrohydraulic excitability analog" (EHEA) deals particularly with the generation of action potentials, volume-pressure changes and contractility in response to externally applied mechanical stimuli, i.e. the EHEA is applied as a pressoreceptor analog. The agreement between the theoretical model results and some experimental physiological observations cited from the literature is quite satisfactory.

Heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) are often among the hypothetical ingredients behind nonzero neutrino masses. If sufficiently light, they can be produced and detected in fixed-target-like experiments. We show that if the HNLs belong to a richer-but rather generic-dark sector, their production mechanism can deviate dramatically from expectations associated with the standard-model weak interactions.

In recent years, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) with their outstanding solubilization properties have emerged as strong candidates for oral enabling formulations of poorly soluble drugs. This study explores the use of drug-based therapeutic DESs (THEDESs) to solubilize a poorly soluble compound with the aim of providing a fixed-dose combination of two complementary therapeutic agents. Ion exchange membranes (IEMs) are permselective membranes that, in principle, only allow the flow of ions with a specific charge sign, opposite to that of the fixed membrane ionic groups (counter-ions). This charge-based selectivity, like the size-based selectivity of classic semipermeable membranes, leads to an uneven distribution of permeating ions on the two sides of the membrane, which allows for ion separation or recovery in various processes in industry or environmental protection. This study investigates the process of planning for future inpatient resources (beds, staff and costs) for maternity (pregnancy and childbirth) services. The process of planning is approached from a patient-centered philosophy; hence, how do we discharge a suitably rested healthy mother who is fully capable of caring for the newborn baby back into the community? This demonstrates some of the difficulties in predicting future births and investigates trends in the average length of stay. While it is relatively easy to document longer-term (past) trends in births and the conditions relating to pregnancy and birth, it is exceedingly difficult to predict the future nature of such trends.
