Microwave welding with SiCNW/PMMA nanocomposite thin films: Enhanced joint strength and performance.

Nanotechnology

January 2025

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Centre of Innovative Nanostructures and Nanodevices (COINN), Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, 32610 Seri Iskandar, Perak Darul Ridzuan, MALAYSIA, Seri Iskandar, Perak, 32610, MALAYSIA.

Most previously reported susceptors for microwave welding are in powder form. In this study, a thin-film susceptor was employed due to its uniform heating rate and ease of handling. Silicon carbide nanowhisker (SiCNW) were incorporated into a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix to create a nanocomposite thin film, which served as the susceptor.

Introduction: Athletes with concussions experience heterogeneous symptoms and clinical trajectories. Subclassification provides diagnostic clarity that may improve prognostication and individualized treatments.

Methods: We hypothesized that endophenotypes of adolescent athletes with concussions differ based on sex and time since injury.

Characterization and functional analysis of type III polyketide synthases in Selaginella moellendorffii.

Planta

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Chemical Biology of Natural Products, Ministry of Education, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Shandong University, Jinan, 250012, Shandong, China.

The evolutionary conservation of type III polyketide synthases (PKS) in Selaginella has been elucidated, and the critical amino acid residues of the anther-specific chalcone synthase-like enzyme (SmASCL) have been identified. Selaginella species are the oldest known vascular plants and a valuable resource for the study of metabolic evolution in land plants. Polyketides, especially flavonoids and sporopollenin precursors, are essential prerequisites for plant land colonization.

A former uranium recovery facility located in northwestern New Mexico currently serves as a uranium mill tailings site undergoing reclamation and decommissioning. High velocity winds are common in the area, causing soil erosion via aeolian processes. Strong winds may carry soil for several kilometers, which is redeposited downwind.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick, NJ, USA.

Background: Characterizing changes in cognitive function during the last years of life is vital for providing appropriate care, supporting quality of life, and planning for future demands on our medical and social resources. The aim of this project was to construct a cognitive function trajectory file spanning the last five years of life to better understand common patterns of cognitive aging.

Method: The analytic cohort included 2019 Medicare decedents, aged 50 or older at death, with five years of continuous enrollment before death (n = 1,952,408).
