Primarily, rats have served as subjects in Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol's (THC) discrimination studies although other species such as monkeys and pigeons have been used. While the introduction of the knockout and transgenic mice has vastly stimulated the study of the discriminative stimulus effects of drugs there is only a single published report of mice trained to discriminate THC. Thus, this study extended those results by providing a systematic replication that THC serves as an effective discriminative stimulus in mice and by further investigating the mechanisms of action involved in the THC discrimination model in the mouse.

Retention of sequential drug discriminations under fixed-interval schedules for long time periods without training.

The experiments showed that sequential drug discriminations can be learned and retained under a fixed-interval (FI) schedule for more than 18 months without additional training under a complex three-choice procedure. Pigeons were trained to discriminate among 5 mg/kg pentobarbital, 2 mg/kg D-amphetamine, and saline. After responding stabilized, dose-response curves were determined for other drugs.

While numerous studies have examined the discriminative stimulus effects of cannabinoids in rats and pigeons, studies with monkeys have been rare. In the present study, rhesus monkeys, trained to discriminate delta 9-THC from vehicle in a two-lever drug discrimination procedure, were tested with a variety of psychoactive drugs, including cannabinoids as well as drugs from other classes.
