A supernumerary kidney is a rare birth defect where an extra kidney is present. This extra kidney has its own separate outer covering, blood supply, and collection system. Normally, percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is the treatment of choice for large kidney stones, but its ideal use for supernumerary kidneys is unknown.

Peptide ion mobility adds an extra dimension of separation to mass spectrometry-based proteomics. The ability to accurately predict peptide ion mobility would be useful to expedite assay development and to discriminate true answers in a database search. There are methods to accurately predict peptide ion mobility through drift tube devices, but methods to predict mobility through high-field asymmetric waveform ion mobility (FAIMS) are underexplored.

Epilepsy Stands Nearby: A Pilot CT Perfusion Study on Post-Stroke Non-Convulsive Status Epilepticus.

Eur J Neurol

February 2025

IRCCS Istituto delle Scienze Neurologiche di Bologna, Department of Neurology and Stroke Center, Maggiore Hospital, Bologna, Italy.

Background: To investigate the relevance of hyperperfusion on computerised perfusion imaging (CTP) in the emergency setting in people with non-convulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) and previous stroke, to derive relevant aspects on the epileptogenic focus and the network recruited for NCSE propagation.

Methods: We enrolled consecutive adult patients with acute-onset NCSE and a previous stroke at a single institution undergoing CTP and EEG during symptoms. All patients underwent standard imaging including CT, CTP, CT angiograms and standard EEG within 30 min from hospital arrival.

Protocol for a systematic review and individual participant data meta-analysis for risk factors for lung cancer in individuals with lung nodules identified by low-dose CT screening.

BMJ Open

January 2025

Centre for Cancer Screening, Prevention and Early Diagnosis, Wolfson Institute of Population Health, Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London, London, UK.

Background: Worldwide, lung cancer (LC) is the second most frequent cancer and the leading cause of cancer related mortality. Low-dose CT (LDCT) screening reduced LC mortality by 20-24% in randomised trials of high-risk populations. A significant proportion of those screened have nodules detected that are found to be benign.

The fast detection of Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) adulteration with poorer quality and lower price vegetable oils is important for the protection of consumers and the market of olive oil from fraudulent activities, the latter exhibiting an increasing trend worldwide during the last few years. In this work, two optical spectroscopic techniques, namely, Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) and UV-Vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy, are employed and are assessed for EVOO adulteration detection, using the same set of olive oil samples. In total, 184 samples were studied, including 40 EVOOs and 144 binary mixtures with pomace, soybean, corn, and sunflower oils, at various concentrations (ranging from 10 to 90% /).
