Schwann cells cultures were established from 40 human peripheral nerves that underwent biopsy according to an explant-reexplantation technique that markedly reduces non-Schwann cells and achieves cultures greatly enriched in Schwann cells suitable for a wide range of studies. Described are the growth characteristics and histochemical, ultrastructural, and ultrastructural-cytochemical patterns of normal human cultured Schwann cells from 12 patients with demonstrable peripheral nerve abnormality. These findings serve as a basis of comparison when seeking abnormalities of Schwann cells grown from peripheral nerves of patients with putative dysschwannian neuropathies.

As the primary glial cells in the peripheral nervous system (PNS), Schwann cells (SCs) have been proven to influence the behavior of cancer cells profoundly and are involved in cancer progression through extensive interactions with cancer cells and other stromal cells. Indeed, the tumor microenvironment (TME) is a critical factor that can significantly limit the efficacy of immunotherapeutic approaches. The TME promotes tumor progression in part by reshaping an immunosuppressive state.

In general, the nerve cells of the peripheral nervous system regenerate normally within a certain period after the physical damage of their axon. However, when peripheral nerves are transected by trauma or tissue extraction for cancer treatment, spontaneous nerve regeneration cannot occur.
