Thanks to twin studies, it has been known for decades that human same-sex sexual behavior (SSB) has a substantial heritable component. However, only recently have large genome-wide association studies (GWAS) begun to illuminate the complex genetics involved. These studies have established that SSB is influenced by many common genetic variants, each with tiny but cumulative effects.

Background: Physicians are planful beings, spending much time imagining and trying to design their ideal careers. Yet, despite actuarial expectations that physicians may spend almost two decades in retirement, it is paradoxical that little attention is generally given to designing an ideal retirement.
Methods: The coauthors are physicians in the latter parts of their careers who both teach leadership to physicians and have thought deeply about physician transitions, including retirement.

This article explores the often-overlooked tragedy of promising happiness through overcoming disability. It draws on qualitative interviews and focus groups with 36 adults with cerebral palsy to explore how medical discourse shapes the ways in which individuals are encouraged to pursue a good life, leading to unintended consequences. Sara Ahmed's theory of happiness is used to understand the dialectics of pursuing a good life through overcoming disability, revealing how medical interventions and discourse during childhood inadvertently contribute to feelings of inferiority and social alienation.

Empirical evidence indicates that the metabolic processes of cancerous and healthy cells can significantly impact immune responses and the fate of tumors. Arginine, a multifaceted amino acid, assumes a crucial and paradoxical role in various metabolic pathways, as certain tumors exhibit arginine auxotrophy while others do not.

Follicular fluid-derived meiosis-activating sterol (FF-MAS), an intermediate in the cholesterol biosynthesis pathway, plays a crucial role in the meiotic resumption of mammalian oocytes. Maintaining a high concentration of FF-MAS in vitro is challenging; therefore, AY9944 A-7, an inhibitor of Δ14-reductase [which converts FF-MAS to testis meiosis-activating sterol (T-MAS)] and Δ7-reductase (which converts T-MAS to cholesterol), has been used to enhance oocyte maturation. This study examined the effects of various concentrations (0, 10, 20, and 40 μM) of AY9944 A-7 on porcine oocyte maturation and subsequent embryo development.
