Deciphering the sources of variability in drug responses requires to understand the processes modulating drug pharmacokinetics. However, pharmacological research suffers from poor reproducibility across clinical, animal, and experimental models. Predictivity can be improved by using Organs-on-Chips, which are more physiological, human-oriented, micro-engineered devices that include microfluidics.

Repeated ionizing radiation exposure induces TRIP13 expression, conferring radioresistance in lung cancer cells.

Radiation therapy is a common treatment modality for lung cancer, and resistance to radiation can significantly affect treatment outcomes. We recently described that lung cancer cells that express more germ cell cancer genes (GC genes, genes that are usually restricted to the germ line) can repair DNA double-strand breaks more rapidly, show higher rates of proliferation and are more resistant to ionizing radiation than cells that express fewer GC genes. The gene encoding TRIP13 appeared to play a large role in this malignant phenotype.

Hibernating brown bears, due to a drastic reduction in metabolic rate, show only moderate muscle wasting. Here, we evaluate if ATPase activity of resting skeletal muscle myosin can contribute to this energy sparing. By analyzing single muscle fibers taken from the same bears, either during hibernation or in summer, we find that fibers from hibernating bears have a mild decline in force production and a significant reduction in ATPase activity.

Mutation of genes related to the SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complex is detected in 20% of all cancers. The SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complex comprises about 15 subunits and is classified into three subcomplexes: cBAF, PBAF, and ncBAF. Previously, we showed that ovarian clear cell carcinoma cells deficient in ARID1A, a subunit of the cBAF complex, are synthetic lethal with several genes required for glutathione (GSH) synthesis and are therefore sensitive to the GSH inhibitor eprenetapopt (APR-246).

Infectious diseases drive wild plant evolution and impact crop yield. Plants, like animals, sense biotic threats through pattern recognition receptors (PRRs). Overly robust immune responses can harm plants; thus, understanding the tuning of defense response mechanisms is crucial for developing pathogen-resistant crops.
