The authors present their experience with the dynamic fetoplacental unit function test using a commercial product containing dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate. The recent literature is cited and the results are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the practicability and applicability of the method in connection with a continuous, reliable evaluation of "at risk" pregnancy.

Placental serotonin is recognized as a key component of feto-placental physiology and can be influenced by environmental factors such as maternal diet, drugs, stress, and immune activation. In this study, we compared the contribution of placental and fetal sources to the maintenance of serotonin levels required for normal fetal development during ontogenetic dynamics. Our results demonstrated the leading role of the placenta at almost all stages of development.

Mechanosensation is essential for endothelial cell (EC) function, which is compromised in early-onset preeclampsia (EPE), impacting offspring health. The ion channels Piezo-type mechanosensitive ion channel component 1 (Piezo1) and transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member 4 (TRPV4) are coregulated mechanosensors in ECs. Current evidence suggests that both channels could mediate aberrant placental endothelial function in EPE.

Feto-placental vascular structure and in silico haemodynamics: Of mice, rats, and human.

Introduction: The complex arborization of the feto-placental vasculature is crucial for optimal fetal nutrition, waste exchange and ultimately, development. Ethical and experimental limitations constrain research into the human placenta, hence experimental animal models such as mice and rats, are crucial to understand placental function. It is unclear how well the mouse and rat feto-placental vascular structure emulates human.

Exposures to complex environmental chemical mixtures during pregnancy reach and target the feto-placental unit. This study investigates the influence of environmental chemical mixtures on placental bioenergetics. Recognizing the essential role of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in placental development and its role in stimulating glycolysis and mitochondrial respiration in trophoblast cells, we explored the effects of chemicals known to disrupt EGFR signaling on cellular energy production.

Study Question: Are maternal levels of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary time (ST) in obese pregnant women associated with placental structural adaptations for facilitating oxygen delivery to the fetus?

Summary Answer: Higher maternal MVPA and ST are associated with a higher density of villi, a proxy measure of placental surface area for oxygen delivery to the fetus, without further added placental vessels.

What Is Known Already: Physical activity during pregnancy intermittently reduces uterine blood flow, potentially limiting placental and fetal oxygen supply. The placenta can mount several adaptive responses, including enlargement of the surface area of villi and/or feto-placental vessels to accommodate fetal needs.
