Microscopic squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus with early submucosal spread was diagnosed in two patients with hiatal hernia and evidence of esophageal reflux. The lesions were not suggestive of malignancy on endoscopic examination. Both patients are known to be alive more than one year after resection and presumably without recurrence. More liberal use of endoscopic brush cytology and biopsy or intubation cytology particularly in the cases at high risk, might substantially improve the chances of very early diagnosis and favorably alter the present grim mortality rate.

Fusobacterium nucleatum is implicated in esophageal cancer; however, its distribution in esophageal cancer tissues remains unknown. This study aimed to clarify the presence and distribution of F. nucleatum in esophageal cancer tissues using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH).

Background And Purpose: It remains unclear whether the lymph-node ratio (LNR) is a relevant factor for the risk of recurrence following neoadjuvant chemotherapy (nCT) with docetaxel, cisplatin, and 5-fluorouracil (DCF), which is a new standard of care for locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) in Japan. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical utility of LNR as a risk factor for recurrence.

Materials And Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 75 patients who underwent nCT-DCF followed by curative surgery for resectable ESCC.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) are distinct histological subtypes of esophageal cancer. The tumor microenvironment of each subtype significantly influences the efficacy of immunotherapy. However, the characteristics of the tumor microenvironments of both subtypes, as well as their specific impacts on immunotherapy outcomes, still require further elucidation.

Adjuvant immunotherapy after neoadjuvant immunochemotherapy and esophagectomy for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma: a real-world study.

Department of Thoracic Oncological Surgery, Zhejiang Cancer Hospital, Hangzhou Institute of Medicine (HIM), Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hangzhou, China.

Background: The role of immunotherapy in the adjuvant setting seems promising in recent years. As per the findings of the CheckMate 577 trial, patients with esophageal cancer (EC) who had neoadjuvant chemoradiation with residual pathologic disease should be considered adjuvant immunotherapy (AIT). However, it is unknown if individuals with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) who have received neoadjuvant immunochemotherapy (NICT) followed by radical surgery also require AIT.
