Cholinergic tone is elevated in obstructive lung conditions such as COPD and asthma, but the cellular mechanisms underlying cholinergic contractions of airway smooth muscle (ASM) are still unclear. Some studies report an important role for L-type Ca channels (LTCC) and Ano1 Ca-activated Cl™ channels (CACC) in these responses, but others dispute their importance. Cholinergic contractions of ASM involve activation of M3Rs, however stimulation of M2Rs exerts a profound hypersensitisation of these responses.

: In the world, approximately 1% of the population suffers from chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU), burdening patients' quality of life and challenging clinicians in terms of treatment. Recent scientific evidence has unveiled the potential role of a family of molecules known as "alarmins" in the pathogenesis of CSU. : Papers focusing on the potential pathogenetic role of alarmins in CSU with diagnostic (as biomarkers) and therapeutic implications, in English and published in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, as well as clinical studies registered in ClinicalTrials.

Since its discovery in 1992, the receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) has emerged as a key receptor in many pathological conditions, especially in inflammatory conditions. RAGE is expressed by most, if not all, immune cells and can be activated by many ligands. One characteristic of RAGE is that its ligands are structurally very diverse and belong to different classes of molecules, making RAGE a promiscuous receptor.

Preeclampsia (PE) is a complex pregnancy syndrome characterized by hypertension with or without proteinuria, affecting 2-6% of pregnancies globally. PE is characterized by excessive release of damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) into the maternal circulation. This DAMP-rich milieu acts on innate immune cells, inducing a proinflammatory state characterized by elevated cytokines such as IL-1β and IL-18.
