Spectroscopic evidence suggests the presence of a highly strained ether ring (Fig. 1) (possibly an epoxide) in the C12-subunit of the previously determined partial structure 2a (Fig. 2) of the major neocarzinostatin chromophore (NCS-Chrom A) which completes assignment of all the oxygens in the molecule. The main product from mercaptan treatment suggests opening of the ether ring involving the addition of one molecule of mercaptan as well as reduction of the C12-substructure, whereas a parallel two-step reduction occurs on NaBH4 treatment. Both reactions occur with rearrangement of the C12-substructure and the implication for the mechanism of action of NCS-Chrom A in DNA strand scission activity is discussed. The evidence suggests a downward revision of the molecular formula for NCS-Chrom A as well as minor components B and C by two protons.

Glutathione (GSH) plays an important role in maintaining redox homeostasis in biological systems. Development of reliable glutathione sensors is of great significance to better understand the role of biomolecules in living cells and organisms. Based on the advantages of the photophysical properties of iridium complexes, we proposed a "turn-on" phosphorescent sensor.

The multi-component ring-opening reactions of cyclic ethers offer an efficient strategy for the rapid introduction of multiple functional groups and the construction of complex molecular architectures. Despite the minimal ring strain in five- and six-membered rings presenting a significant challenge for ring-opening, advancements have been made. Traditional acid-catalyzed pathways have been complemented by a novel approach involving carbene-induced oxonium intermediate formation, which has emerged in recent years and expanded the selectivity of ring-opening reactions.

Allylic ethers and alcohols are essential structural motifs commonly present in natural products and pharmaceuticals. Direct allylic C-H oxygenation of internal alkenes is one of the most direct methods, bypassing the necessity for an allylic leaving group that is needed in the traditional Tsuji-Trost reaction. Herein, we develop an efficient and practical method for synthesizing (E)-allyl ethers from readily available internal alkenes and alcohols or phenols via selective allylic C-H oxidation.

Dieckol is a brown algal phlorotannin with potent bioactivities such as hepatoprotective effects. This study aimed to produce dieckol-rich extract from Eisenia bicyclis and apply them as a functional ingredient for a novel bacterial cellulose (BC)-based dessert. The modeling and optimization of the ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) process were performed.

Context: Understanding the structural characteristics of coal at the molecular level is fundamental for its effective utilization. To explore the molecular structure characteristic, the long-flame coal from Daliuta (DLT), coking coal from Yaoqiao (YQ), and anthracite from Taixi (TX) were investigated using various techniques such as elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, solid-state C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Based on the structural parameters, the coal molecular model was constructed and optimized.
