The ionizable lipid component of lipid nanoparticle (LNP) formulations is essential for mRNA delivery by facilitating endosomal escape. Conventionally, these lipids are synthesized through complex, multistep chemical processes that are both time-consuming and require significant engineering. Furthermore, the development of new ionizable lipids is hindered by a limited understanding of the structure-activity relationships essential for effective mRNA delivery.

Social ecology of artisanal sand mining in the Niger River around Bamako, Mali.

PLoS One

January 2025

Organic Plant Production and Agroecosystems Research in the Tropics and Subtropics, Universität Kassel, Kassel, Germany.

Sand, shaping both natural waterways and urban infrastructure, has recently seen a major surge in extraction, particularly in rapidly urbanizing regions like West Africa. To assess the organization, quantification, and socio-ecological implications of sand mining around Mali's capital Bamako, we employed a mixed methods approach including structured and unstructured interviews, truck counts, turbidity analyses, and river depth measurements. Our study identified five artisanal systems for mining sand and gravel from the Niger River, using tied-up pirogues, single pirogues, carts, tractors, and trucks.

Chronic subdural haematoma (cSDH) is a common subtype of traumatic brain injury, typically affecting older people living with frailty and multimorbidity. Until now, no published guideline has existed internationally to guide management, perhaps explaining why the care of the older cSDH patient varies between neurosurgical centres. The Improving Care in Elderly Neurosurgery Initiative guideline is the first guideline dedicated to the care of patients with cSDH across the entire patient pathway, from initial presentation through to rehabilitation and discharge after surgery.

Technologies for studying phase-separated biomolecular condensates.

Adv Biotechnol (Singap)

March 2024

Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Functional Genes, MOE Key Laboratory of Gene Function and Regulation, State Key Laboratory of Biocontrol, School of Life Sciences, Sun Yat-Sen University, GuangZhou, GuangDong, China.

Biomolecular condensates, also referred to as membrane-less organelles, function as fundamental organizational units within cells. These structures primarily form through liquid-liquid phase separation, a process in which proteins and nucleic acids segregate from the surrounding milieu to assemble into micron-scale structures. By concentrating functionally related proteins and nucleic acids, these biomolecular condensates regulate a myriad of essential cellular processes.
