This paper contains a comparison between four experimental methods for the detection of trace metals in biological tissues, e.g. autoradiography, dithizone-, Timm-staining and microPIXE (Particle Induced X-ray Emission). As research object the hippocampus of the rat was chosen and mainly the Zn-distribution in the fascia dentata has been examined. The comparison was judged on four criteria: spatial resolution, specificity, quantification and influence of the protein binding of the metal on the outcome of each method. Some additional Timm and microPIXE experiments have been performed to compare the metal concentrations for both normal and Zn-deficient rats. The Zn/Cu ratio for both kinds of rats were calculated and some striking differences in the concentrations were obtained. The Zn/Cu ratio for a normal rat was found to be about 40% higher than for a deficient one.

The presence of heavy metal(loid)s in sewage sludge is a cause of concern and an obstacle to its agricultural valorisation. This study analysed the elemental composition of sewage sludge from 42 Portuguese wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) during summer and winter, investigating heavy metal(loid) contamination, nutrient content, and potential risks related to sludge application to agricultural soils. Levels of 8 heavy metal(loid)s were investigated, ranging from not detected (Hg) to 5120 mg kg dw (Zn), decreasing in the order Zn > Cu > Cr > Ni > Pb > As>Cd > Hg.

Water-dispersible core/shell CuInZnSe/ZnS (CIZSe/ZnS) quantum dots (QDs) were efficiently synthesized under microwave irradiation using -acetylcysteine (NAC) and sodium citrate as capping agents. The photoluminescence (PL) emission of CIZSe/ZnS QDs can be tuned from 593 to 733 nm with varying the Zn : Cu molar ratio in the CIZSe core. CIZSe/ZnS QDs prepared with a Zn : Cu ratio of 0.

This study aims to investigate the association between serum copper (Cu), selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), Se/Cu and Zn/Cu ratios and the risk of sarcopenia. In this study, which involved 2766 adults aged ≥ 20 years enrolled in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2011 to 2016, multivariable logistic regression, restricted cubic spline (RCS) models and mediation analyses were used. After full adjustment, multivariable logistic regression revealed that higher serum copper levels were correlated with an increased risk of sarcopenia.

The importance of pH in stormwater bioretention beds cannot be overstated since it impacts plant and microbial populations and removal of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) from stormwater runoff. This study investigated the effects of dolomite amendment on pH neutralization and subsequent PTE immobilization in bioretention media. To assess dolomite dissolution, pH neutralization, and PTE immobilization, engineered bioretention media was amended with different dolomite ratios and samples of dolomite-amended media were collected from two bioretention beds, one and two months after installation.
