The expression of Fc-IgG receptors on mononuclear phagocytes (monocytes/macrophages), as well as the activity of soluble immune suppressor supernatant of T-cell proliferation (SISS-T) factor have been investigated in 23 patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the lower lip, including 8 patients with metastases in the regional lymph glands. The results demonstrated a significant increase of the expression of Fc-IgG receptors only on circulating monocytes of patients with metastatic SCC. The suppressor function evaluated by means of the SISS-T factor proved normal in patients with nonmetastatic skin SCC and reduced in 8 patients with metastatic SCC.

Domains known as von Willebrand factor type D (VWD) are found in extracellular and cell-surface proteins including von Willebrand factor, mucins, and various signaling molecules and receptors. Many VWD domains have a glycine-aspartate-proline-histidine (GDPH) amino-acid sequence motif, which is hydrolytically cleaved post-translationally between the aspartate (Asp) and proline (Pro). The Fc IgG binding protein (FCGBP), found in intestinal mucus secretions and other extracellular environments, contains 13 VWD domains, 11 of which have a GDPH cleavage site.

Antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC) by natural killer (NK) lymphocytes eliminates cells infected with viruses. Anti-viral ADCC requires three components: (1) antibody; (2) effector lymphocytes with the Fc-IgG receptor CD16A; and (3) viral proteins in infected cell membranes. Fc-afucosylated antibodies bind with greater affinity to CD16A than fucosylated antibodies; individuals' variation in afucosylation contributes to differences in ADCC.

Platelet Activation and Aggregation Induced by Streptococcus bovisStreptococcus equinus Complex.

Streptococcus bovisStreptococcus equinus complex (SBSEC) is a common cause of infective endocarditis (IE). For IE-pathogens, the capacity to activate and aggregate platelets is believed to be an important virulence mechanism. While the interactions between bacteria and platelets have been described in detail for many Gram-positive pathogens, little research has been carried out with SBSEC in this respect.

Objectives: Tumor vasculature is structurally abnormal, with anatomical deformities, reduced pericyte coverage and low tissue perfusion. As a result of this vascular dysfunction, tumors are often hypoxic, which is associated with an aggressive tumor phenotype, and reduced delivery of therapeutic compounds to the tumor. We have previously shown that a peptide containing the thrombospondin-1 type I repeats (3TSR) specifically targets tumor vessels and induces vascular normalization in a mouse model of epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC).

Objective: Obesity-linked type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a worldwide health concern and many novel approaches are being considered for its treatment and subsequent prevention of serious comorbidities. Co-administration of glucagon like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and peptide YY (PYY) renders a synergistic decrease in energy intake in obese men. However, mechanistic details of the synergy between these peptide agonists and their effects on metabolic homeostasis remain relatively scarce.
