This study reports on the possible origin and putative sensory nature of substance P-containing fibres in the lung. Following vagal ligation experiments, carried out on adult guinea pigs, the vagi, nodose ganglia and lungs were investigated by immunocytochemistry and radioimmunoassay. After ligation the lung showed a marked depletion of substance P-immunoreactivity; concomitantly there was an accumulation of immunoreactive material proximal to the ligature, indicating a peripheral direction of the peptide axonal flow. Several substance P-immunoreactive neuronal cell bodies were observed in the nodose ganglion. These results suggest that substance P-immunoreactive fibres in the lung might originate from primary sensory neurones in the nodose ganglion, which is compatible with other evidence that substance P has a sensory role.

With the intensification of human activities, the amount of phosphorus (P)-containing waste has increased. When such waste is not recycled, P is released into the environment, leading to environmental issues such as the eutrophication of water bodies. In this study, based on the material flow analysis method, a P Waste Flow analysis model (P-WFA) was developed to analyze the P flow in the waste system of Poyang Lake, the largest freshwater lake in China.

Effects of pH-varying thermal modification on sewage sludge: A focus on releasing nitrogen- and phosphorus-containing substances.

Water Res

June 2024

State Key Laboratory of Pollution Control and Resource Reuse, School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Tongji University, Shanghai 200092, China; Shanghai Institute of Pollution Control and Ecological Security, Shanghai 200092, China. Electronic address:

Sewage sludge is promising for the recovery and utilisation of nutrient components, but its complex nature hinders the release of these components. The combination of pH and thermal modifications shows promise for the release of nutrient components from sludge. However, comprehensive studies on the full spectrum of pH levels and corresponding mechanisms of pH-varying thermal modification are lacking.

Simultaneously enhancing the fire safety and mechanical properties of epoxy resin (EP) remains a persistent challenge. Herein, a high-efficient phosphaphenanthrene-based flame retardant (FNP) is synthesized using 3,5-diamino-1,2,4-triazole, 4-formylbenzoic acid, and 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide. Due to the presence of active amine groups, FNP is employed as a co-curing agent for fabricating EP composites with outstanding fire safety and mechanical properties.

Recovery of phosphorus from wastewater containing humic substances through vivianite crystallization: Interaction and mechanism analysis.

J Environ Manage

April 2023

Key Laboratory of Integrated Regulation and Resource Development on Shallow Lakes, Ministry of Education, College of Environment, Hohai University, Nanjing, 210098, China. Electronic address:

Vivianite crystallization has been regarded as a suitable option for recovering phosphorus (P) from P-containing wastewater. However, the presence of humic substances (HS) would inevitably affect the formation of vivianite crystals. Therefore, the influences of HS on vivianite crystallization and the changes in the harvested vivianite crystals were investigated in this study.

Phosphorus (P) is a non-substitutable resource and global reserves of phosphate rock are limited. In this study, phosphorus recovery by Chlorella vulgaris, and the effects of different light intensities (2000 Lux, 5000 Lux, 8000 Lux, 12,000 Lux) on the phosphorus distribution in the soluble microbial product (SMP), extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) and intracellular polymeric substance (IPS) were analyzed. The results showed that the 5000 Lux was the optimum light intensity for P uptake and transformation by Chlorella vulgaris under mixotrophic cultivation.
