The antimicrobial properties of preterm and term breast milk cells were compared. They were similar in cell numbers and in the capacity to phagocytose and kill staphylococci. Interferon production on endotoxin challenge appeared to be higher in preterm cells. The antibacterial activity of breast milk cells was retained after storage at 4 degrees C for 24-48 hours. Cell numbers were unaffected by passage through a standard oral paediatric feeding set.

An iron-containing milk protein named lactoferrin (Lf) has demonstrated antiparasitic and immunomodulatory properties against a variety of human parasites. This protein has shown its capability to bind and transport iron molecules in the vicinity of the host-pathogen environment. The ability of parasites to sequester the iron molecule and to increase their pathogenicity and survival depends on the availability of iron sources.

Background: The causal relationship between percentage of fat in milk consumption and cancer risk lacks sufficient investigation. The purpose of this study was to explore whether the percentage of fat in milk consumption is a factor that affects the risk variation of several common types of cancer.
Methods: Mendelian randomization (MR) was performed to estimate the unconfounded causal relationship between the percentage of fat in milk consumption and the risk of six cancers related to milk intake, as well as to assess the associations between body fat percentage and these cancers.
