Carbapenemase producing (CPEs) represent a group of multidrug resistant pathogens for which few, if any, therapeutics options remain available. CPEs generally harbor plasmids that encode resistance to last resort carbapenems and many other antibiotics. We previously performed a high throughput screen to identify compounds that can disrupt the maintenance and replication of resistance conferring plasmids through use of a synthetic screening plasmid introduced into K-12 cells.

Online control ability affects precision fitting performances of long-term Tai Chi practitioners in older adults.

Gait Posture

December 2024

Department of Health Science and Kinesiology, Georgia Southern University, Statesboro, USA. Electronic address:

Background: Age-related decline in goal-directed behavior could be risky for older adults to maintain daily activities. Our previous studies have shown that long-term Tai Chi (TC) practice could improve motor performance and postural control during goal-directed tasks. However, there was a paucity of studies examining TC's effects on online control of goal-directed action.

Phenotypic screening in zebrafish larvae identifies promising cyanobacterial strains and pheophorbide a as insulin mimetics.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR/CIMAR), University of Porto, Avenida General Norton de Matos, s/n, Matosinhos, 4450-208, Portugal.

Diabetes is a pandemic disease that causes the loss of control of glucose regulation in the organism, in consequence of dysfunction of insulin production or functionality. In this work, the antidiabetic bioactivity of 182 fractions from 19 cyanobacteria strains derived from the LEGE Culture Collection were analysed using the 2-NBDG assay in zebrafish larvae. From this initial screening, two fractions (57 (06104_D) and 107 (03283_B)) were identified as promising insulin mimetics.

Retinoblastoma, a rare childhood eye cancer, has hereditary and non-hereditary forms. While TNM classification helps in prognosis, understanding molecular mechanisms is vital for the clinical behavior of retinoblastoma prediction. Our study aimed to analyze the expression levels of key Wnt pathway proteins, GSK3β, LEF1, β-catenin, and DVL1, and associate them to non-phosphorylated active form (pRb) and the phosphorylated inactive form (ppRb) and N-myc expression, in retinoblastoma cells and healthy retinal cells, in order to elucidate their roles in retinoblastoma and identify potential targets that could help to improve diagnostic and therapy.

Introduction: The evidence of association between physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior (SB) and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) remains controversial in observational studies, this study aimed to generate new hypotheses between PA, SB and GDM.

Methods: Our study performed Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to explore the effects of three types of PA (moderate physical activity (MPA), moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA), accelerometer-based physical activity (ABPA)), three types of SB (television watching (TV), leisure computer use (PC), driving (DR)) on GDM and the mediating effect of body mass index (BMI). The inverse variance weighted method was used for the major analysis.
