Burn injuries elicit a unique and dynamic stress response which can lead to burn injury progression. Though neutrophils represent crucial players in the burn-induced immunological events, the dynamic secretion pattern and systemic levels of neutrophil-derived factors have not been investigated in detail so far. Serum levels of neutrophil elastase (NE), myeloperoxidase (MPO), citrullinated histone H3 (CitH3), and complement factor C3a were quantified in burn victims over 4 weeks post injury.

microRNAs regulate numerous biological processes, making them potential therapeutic agents. Problems with delivery and stability of these molecules have limited their usefulness as treatments. We demonstrate that synthetic high-density lipoprotein nanoparticles (HDL NPs) topically applied to the intact ocular surface are taken up by epithelial and stromal cells.

Infection is a common and severe complication of burn injury: Sepsis accounts for 47% of postburn mortality. Burn-induced T cell suppression likely contributes to the increased infection susceptibility in burn patients. However, little is known about the kinetics of T cell dysfunction after burn and its underlying mechanisms.

Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is a common autoimmune blistering disease in which autoantibodies mainly target the hemidesmosomal component BP180 (also known as type XVII collagen) in basal keratinocytes. Various triggering factors are known to induce BP onset, including radiotherapy, burns, ultraviolet exposure, surgery, and the use of dipeptidyl peptidase-IV inhibitors (DPP4i), which are widely used antihyperglycemic drugs. Here, we present a case of BP triggered by a thermal burn under medication with DPP4i.
