AI Article Synopsis

  • Twenty patients with advanced or recurrent vulvar carcinoma were treated with either bleomycin alone or bleomycin combined with mitomycin C.
  • Five out of eleven patients on bleomycin alone had an objective response, while five out of nine patients on the combination treatment also responded positively.
  • No severe side effects were reported, suggesting further investigation into these treatments for patients not cured by surgery or radiation.

Article Abstract

Twenty patients with advanced and/or recurrent vulvar carcinoma were treated with bleomycin alone or combined with mitomycin C. Five of 11 patients in the bleomycin-treated group showed objective response (two complete and three partial) and five of nine patients in the bleomycin-mitomycin C-treated group showed objective response (one complete and four partial). No severe side effects were seen. Now that activity against this disease has been demonstrated for bleomycin, alone or combined with mitomycin C, attention should be directed to treating those patients not cured by surgery and radiation therapy alone.

Pathological scars are classified into hypertrophic scars and keloids, and currently have poor treatment outcomes and high recurrence rates. Bleomycin has received widespread attention in scar treatment in recent years, but there is currently no exploration on its real-world data. PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases were searched, and eight retrospective studies on the use of bleomycin for treatment were included, covering a total of 562 patients with keloids and hypertrophic scars.

Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) arises from dysregulated wound healing, leading to excessive extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition and impaired lung function. Macrophages exhibit high plasticity, polarizing to pro-inflammatory M1 during early inflammation and anti-inflammatory, fibrosis-inducing M2 during later stages of PF. Additionally, neutrophils and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) release mediated by peptidyl arginine deiminase (PAD-4), also play a key role in PF progression.

Several studies have looked into the effectiveness of bleomycin treatment for warts using various injection methods, such as intralesional injection, multiple puncture technique, jet injection, and moonlet needle prick method, in various concentrations and doses. However, injection methods have been linked to acute pain and bleeding. The purpose of this study is to examine the efficacy of microneedling combination with topical bleomycin and cryotherapy in the treatment of resistant warts on the hands and feet.
