The influence of radical versus more restricted operation and Azulfidine prophylaxis was studied in a controlled, partially randomized double blind multicenter trial (16 centres) in 177 patients over 3 years. Early relapse occurred more frequently in the radically operated group (49 vs. 31%) and less frequently under Azulfidine prophylaxis (34 vs. 46%). The radical operation had no advantage over the more restricted procedure and should be abandoned in Crohn's disease.

Gut microbiota imbalance and alterations in the chemokine-chemokine receptor interactions are pivotal in the initiation and advancement of ulcerative colitis (UC). The current UC treatments are prolonged, exhibit high recurrence rates, and may lead to colorectal cancer. So, this study explores the efficacy of () mucin in preventing DSS-induced UC.

The Key Laboratory of Environmental Pollution Monitoring and Disease Control, Ministry of Education, Guizhou Provincial Engineering Research Center of Ecological Food Innovation, Collaborative Innovation Center for Prevention and Control of Endemic and Ethnic Regional Diseases Co-constructed by the Province and Ministry, School of Public Health, Guizhou Medical University, No.6 Ankang Road, Guian New Area, Guizhou 561113, China. Electronic address:

Grifola frondosa polysaccharide (GFP) is a consumable fungus recognized for its potential health advantages. The present study aimed to investigate the development and potential etiologies of ulcerative colitis (UC) utilizing oxazolone (OXZ) as an inducer in mice, along with assessing the therapeutic effects of GFP at varying doses in UC mice, with sulfasalazine (SASP) serving as the positive control. The obtained results indicated that OXZ intervention in mice induced numerous physical manifestations of UC, including increased disease activity index (DAI), decreased goblet cell division, enhanced fibrosis, reduced expression of Claudin1 and Zona encludens protein1 (ZO-1), decreased proliferative activity of colonic mucosal epithelial cells, disturbed oxidation balance, and alterations in intestinal flora.

Implication of system x in neuroinflammation during the onset and maintenance of neuropathic pain.

J Neuroinflammation

May 2024

Institute of Neuroscience, Group of Neuropharmacology, Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain), Avenue Hippocrate 53 (B1.53.01), Brussels, 1200, Belgium.

Background: Despite the high prevalence of neuropathic pain, treating this neurological disease remains challenging, given the limited efficacy and numerous side effects associated with current therapies. The complexity in patient management is largely attributed to an incomplete understanding of the underlying pathological mechanisms. Central sensitization, that refers to the adaptation of the central nervous system to persistent inflammation and heightened excitatory transmission within pain pathways, stands as a significant contributor to persistent pain.

Inborn errors of immunity (IEI) are often associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). IEI can be corrected by allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT); however, peritransplantation intestinal inflammation may increase the risk of gut graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). Vedolizumab inhibits the homing of lymphocytes to the intestine and may attenuate gut GVHD, yet its role in preventing GVHD in pediatric patients with IEI-associated IBD has not been studied.

Sulfasalazine promotes ferroptosis through AKT-ERK1/2 and P53-SLC7A11 in rheumatoid arthritis.

Inflammopharmacology

April 2024

Department of Orthopedics, The Affiliated Changzhou Second People's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, Changzhou Medical Center, Nanjing Medical University, 29 Xinglong Alley, Changzhou, 213003, China.

Objective: Ferroptosis has been reported to play a role in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Sulfasalazine, a common clinical treatment for ankylosing spondylitis, also exerts pathological influence on the progression of rheumatoid arthritis including the induced ferroptosis of fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLSs), which result in the perturbated downstream signaling and the development of RA. The aim of this study was to investigate the underlying mechanism so as to provide novel insight for the treatment of RA.
