Why does cardiology have many extreme publishing authors?

Hellenic J Cardiol

January 2025

Departments of Medicine and of Epidemiology and Population Health, Stanford University School of Medicine; and Meta-Research Innovation Center at Stanford (METRICS), Stanford University, Stanford, California, USA. Electronic address:

Under diverse contributing factors in different scientific micro-environments, the number of authors who publish extreme numbers of full articles in a single year has increased. Cardiology is the subfield that has the largest share of authors with extreme publishing behavior than any other subfield in science (outside physics). Between 2000 and 2022, 137 authors in the subfield of Cardiovascular System (CVS, Science-Metrix classification) have published over 60 full articles in at least one calendar year and are also highly-cited.

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare, progressive, and poor-prognosis systemic disorder that primarily affects women of reproductive age, with a higher prevalence among individuals of Caucasian origin. However, there are limited reliable data on the prevalence of LAM during pregnancy. The fulminant respiratory clinical presentation that often includes progressive dyspnea on exertion, cough, or hemoptysis, frequently complicated by pneumothorax, and the increased risk of spontaneous abortion due to increased estrogen and progesterone production during gestation, are arguments that most often make the diagnosed woman avoid pregnancy.

To intubate or not? Balancing anesthesia in rodent fMRI: strategies to mitigate confounding effects.

Cereb Cortex

January 2025

Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine (INM-3), Research Center Juelich, Forschungszentrum Jülich, Wilhelm-Johnen-Strasse, 52425 Jülich, Germany.

More than a decade ago, the introduction of intubation and mechanical ventilation for performing blood oxygen level-dependent functional MRI studies in the rodent brain allowed an improved control over the physiological conditions during scanning sessions. An accurate understanding of respiratory parameters permits to respect the 3Rs in animal research, improves significantly the fMRI outcome, and promises improved translational studies. Developments also prompted a better comprehension on anesthetics and their impact on rodent brain physiology and function, bringing new insights on the buildup of carbon dioxide, interhemispheric connectivity, or arousal, which understanding are paramount for maturing better fMRI protocols in awake rodents.

Ocean acidification and global warming may favor blue carbon service in a Cymodocea nodosa community by modifying carbon metabolism and dissolved organic carbon fluxes.

Mar Pollut Bull

January 2025

Departamento de Biología, Facultad de Ciencias del Mar y Ambientales, Instituto Universitario de Investigación Marina (INMAR), Campus de Excelencia Internacional del Mar (CEI·MAR), Universidad de Cádiz, 11510 Puerto Real, Cádiz, Spain.

Ocean acidification (OA) and global warming (GW) drive a variety of responses in seagrasses that may modify their carbon metabolism, including the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) fluxes and the organic carbon stocks in upper sediments. In a 45-day full-factorial mesocosm experiment simulating forecasted CO and temperature increase in a Cymodocea nodosa community, we found that net community production (NCP) was higher under OA conditions, particularly when combined with warming (i.e.
