Initial diagnosis of human T cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV) infections is mainly based by detecting antibodies in plasma or serum using laboratory-based methods. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a rapid screening test for HTLV-I antibodies. Our rapid screening test uses HTLV-I p24 antigen conjugated to gold nanoparticles and an anti-human IgG antibody immobilized to a nitrocellulose strip to detect human HTLV-I p24-specific IgG antibodies via immunochromatography.

Objective: To investigate the prevalence of human T-cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV) type-I/II infection among voluntary blood donors in Jiangsu (Nanjing, Suzhou, Xuzhou).

Methods: From 2016 to 2019, 408 262 samples of voluntary blood donors from four blood stations in Jiangsu Province (Jiangsu Province Blood Center, Nanjing Red Cross Blood Center, Suzhou Central Blood Station, and Xuzhou Central Blood Station) were screened for HTLV-I/II antibody by ELISA. The positive samples were sent to National Center for Clinical Laboratories for confirmation by RT-PCR and Western blot.

Aims: To reduce the dose of arsenic used against human T-cell leukemia/lymphoma and to sensitize cells to drug treatment, we combined arsenic/interferon-alpha (As/IFN-α) with thymoquinone (TQ) in HTLV-I positive (HuT-102 and C91) and HTLV-1 negative (CEM and Jurkat) cell lines.

Main Methods: Cells were treated with TQ, As/IFN-α and combinations. Trypan blue and flow cytometry were used to investigate viability and cell cycle effects.

Breastfeeding has been reported to be the predominant route of vertical transmission of HTLV-I.
