Background: Based primarily on in vitro and animal models, with little data directly addressing patient outcomes, current guidelines recommend treating staphylococcal prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE) with antibiotic combinations including gentamicin and rifampin. Here, we synthesize the clinical data on adjunctive rifampin and gentamicin in staphylococcal PVE.

Methods: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of PubMed- and Cochrane-indexed studies reporting outcomes of staphylococcal PVE treated with adjunctive rifampin, gentamicin, both agents, or neither (ie, glycopeptide or β-lactam monotherapy).

Evaluation of the effect of gentamicin in surgical perfusion solution on cataract postoperative endophthalmitis.

BMC Ophthalmol

October 2022

Tianjin Key Laboratory of Retinal Functions and Diseases, Tianjin Branch of National Clinical Research Center for Ocular Disease, Eye Institute, School of Optometry, Tianjin Medical University Eye Hospital, Tianjin, China.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of gentamicin in surgical perfusion solution on endophthalmitis incidence after cataract surgery.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of endophthalmitis incidence was conducted in two groups of patients who underwent cataract surgery, with (Group B) or without gentamicin (Group A) in the surgical perfusion solution. Endophthalmitis incidence, the isolated pathogenic bacteria strains and their antibiotic sensitivity, and the drug-resistant genotype of the pathogens were examined.

The Wheat Head Blight Pathogen Can Recruit Collaborating Bacteria from Soil.

Cells

September 2022

State Key Laboratory of Ecological Pest Control for Fujian and Taiwan Crops, College of Plant Protection, Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, No. 15 Shangxiadian Road, Cangshan District, Fuzhou 350000, China.

In nature, fungal endophytes often have facultative endohyphal bacteria (FEB). Can a model plant pathogenic fungus have them, and does it affect their phenotype? We constructed a growth system/microcosm to allow an isolate to grow through natural soil and then re-isolated it on a gentamicin-containing medium, allowing endohyphal growth of bacteria while killing other bacteria. PH-1 labelled with a gene staining the fungal nuclei fluorescent red was used to confirm the re-isolation of the fungus.

Prosthetic joint infections (PJIs) ensued from total joint replacement (TJR) pose a severe threat to patients that involve poor health outcomes, severe pain, death (in severe cases), and negative influence patients' quality of life. Antibiotic-loaded bone cement (ALBC) is frequently used for the prevention and treatment of PJI. This work aims to study gentamicin release from carbon nanotubes (CNTs) incorporated in polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) bone cement to prolong release over several weeks to provide prophylaxis from PJIs after surgery.

Gentamicin-Containing Collagen Implant May Reduce Surgical Site Infections After Open Infrainguinal Arterial Revascularization.

Ann Vasc Surg

January 2022

School of Medicine, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, The University of Western Australia, Nedlands, Western Australia, Australia; Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Nedlands, Western Australia, Australia; Curtin Medical School, Faculty of Health Sciences, Curtin University, Perth, Western Australia Australia; Heart and Vascular Research Institute, Level 2 Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, Nedlands, Western Australia, Australia.

Background: Deep-space surgical site infections carry significant morbidity and mortality. The evidence for gentamicin-containing collagen implants at reducing surgical site infections in open infrainguinal arterial surgery is limited. This study examined whether gentamicin-containing collagen implants reduces 30-day surgical site infections and their severity following open infrainguinal arterial surgery.
