Incubation of isolated rat intestinal epithelial cells with selenite resulted in a rapid decrease of intracellular glutathione (GSH) and about 5 nmol of Se (added as 75Se labelled selenite, 50 microM) was accumulated per 10(6) cells during 20 min. Addition of exogenous GSH enhanced cellular accumulation of Se, while the gamma-glutamyl transferase inhibitor, serine-borate, decreased uptake. The added exogenous GSH was rapidly consumed (oxidized) by selenite. Depletion of GSH by diethylmaleate (DEM) inhibited selenite uptake both in in situ isolated intestinal loop, everted gut sacs and in isolated intestinal cells. The findings indicate that both intracellular and extracellular GSH, and gamma-glutamyltransferase, play a role in the absorption of selenite in the intestine.

A novel biosynthesis approach was used to develop zinc selenite (ZnSeO) catalysts from the plant extracts of Nephrolepis cordifolia (ZnSeO:NC) and Ziziphus jujube (ZnSeO:ZJ) using hydrothermal method. This study investigates the structural, morphological, and optical properties of pure and biosynthesized ZnSeO catalysts. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirms the presence of an orthorhombic phase in both catalyst types.

Selenium-enriched peptides (SePPs) were isolated from Se-enriched soybean sprouts as the selenium (Se) supplement. The preparation of SePPs was optimised, and their Se content, stability during drying, and absorption properties, were examined. The maximum in vitro antioxidant activity of SePPs was achieved after 5 h of alcalase, at 50 °C, pH 9, 3 % substrate concentration, and 5 % enzyme concentration.

Recently, atomic-thickness van der Waals (vdW) layered bismuth selenite (BiSeO) has been successfully synthesized, not only expanding the family of two-dimensional (2D) materials, but also playing a pivotal role in the advancement of 2D electronics as a high- dielectric. In this work, we systematically study the basic properties of 2D BiSeO through first-principles calculations, focusing on the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect and layer-dependent behaviors. The results show that SOC can adjust the bandgap of bulk/2D BiSeO from direct to indirect, with the bandgap decreasing upon increasing the thickness due to quantum confinement.

Oenobiol Sun Expert, a food formulation designed to enhance skin health prior to sun exposure, has been optimized by incorporating the OenoGrape Advanced Complex, which includes grape pomace extract, increased selenium content and 10% lycopene-rich tomato extract, with these constituents exhibiting high antioxidant potential. To evaluate the effects of these individual ingredients and the overall formulation at the cellular level, the AOP1 cell antioxidant efficacy assay was employed to measure the intracellular free radical scavenging activity, while the Cell Antioxidant Assay (CAA or DCFH-DA) assay was used to assess peroxidation scavenging at the plasma membrane level. The indirect antioxidant activity was examined using stably transfected cell lines containing a luciferase reporter gene controlled by the Antioxidant Response Element (ARE), which activates the endogenous antioxidant system via the Nrf2/Keap1-ARE pathway.

Recycling food waste by feeding it to insects can result in the continuous production of high-quality animal feed protein and organic fertilizer. However, the bioconversion efficiency and safety of using insects as feed protein for animal breeding are important factors limiting the development of this technology. Therefore, we aimed to optimize the efficiency of bioconversion of food waste using Lucilia sericata maggot (LSM).
