Sixteen new heterocyclic 1,5-benzodiazepine derivatives (compounds AN8-AN24) were screened for their central action. Compounds AN8-AN10 and AN17 strongly antagonized the action of pentetrazol, compounds AN10, AN14-AN17 and AN22 had potent antiserotonin properties, and compounds AN10, AN19, AN20 and AN23 markedly potentiated the action of DOPA.

Integrative and conjugative elements (ICEs) are chromosomally integrated self-transmissible mobile genetic elements. Although some ICEs are known to carry genes for the degradation of aromatic compounds, information on their genetic features is limited. We identified a new member of the ICE family carrying biphenyl catabolic genes and salicylic acid catabolic genes from the PCB-degrading strain KF716.

Article Synopsis
  • The rise of interest in acetogenic bacteria for gas fermentation is driven by their potential in producing biochemicals from renewable resources, especially through thermophilic organisms, which can efficiently convert syngas into volatile compounds.* -
  • A study sequenced the genomes of 12 different strains of a specific genus, revealing that DSM 1974 consists of at least two distinct strains, challenging previous categorizations and highlighting the genetic similarities and differences among them.* -
  • The findings suggest that while some strains share close genetic relationships and cannot be distinguished at the species level, others, like DSM 21394, likely represent new species, enhancing our understanding of their genetic diversity.*

Strategy of Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes C70 for effective degradation of phenol and salicylate.

PLoS One

August 2017

Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Tartu, Tartu, Estonia.

Phenol- and naphthalene-degrading indigenous Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes strain C70 has great potential for the bioremediation of polluted areas. It harbours two chromosomally located catechol meta pathways, one of which is structurally and phylogenetically very similar to the Pseudomonas sp. CF600 dmp operon and the other to the P.

The selectivty and anti-metastatic activity of oral bioavailable butyric acid prodrugs.

Invest New Drugs

September 2006

Felsenstein Medical Research Center, Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Beilinson Campus, Petach Tikva, 49100, Israel.

Acyloxyalkyl ester prodrugs of histone deacetylase inhibitors, a family of anti-cancer agents, are metabolized intracellularly to acids and aldehyde(s). The purpose of this study was to assess the in vitro and in vivo anticancer activity, selectivity and oral bioavailability of these prodrugs. The prodrugs exhibited a hierarchal potency of AN-193 > or = AN-7 > AN-1 and AN-9 >> AN-10 against murine lung carcinoma (3LLD122) and human breast carcinoma (MCF-7) cell lines.

Pseudomonas stutzeri strain AN10 is a naphthalene-degrading strain whose dissimilatory genes are chromosomally encoded. We sequenced the entire naphthalene-degradation lower pathway of P. stutzeri AN10, this being, together with the upper-pathway reported previously (Bosch R.
