Atmosphere pollution with noxious gaseous trace contaminants exhaled by man in an enclosure was investigated as a function of free volume per man. The parameter was shown to depend on the environmental conditions: with increase in free volume the total level of atmosphere pollution decreased, being proportional to the concentration of gaseous trace contaminants in the exhaled air. Experimental curves of accumulation of gaseous chemicals exhaled by man were built.

Global pollution caused by micro/nanoplastics (M/NPs) is threatening agro-ecosystems, compromising food security and human health. Also, the increasing use of graphene-family nanomaterials (GFNs) in agricultural products has led to their widespread presence in agricultural systems. However, there is a large gap in the literature on the combined effects of MNPs and GFNs on agricultural plants.

Resuspended Nano-Minerals in Coal Ash: A Potential Factor in Elevated Lung Cancer Rates in Xuanwei and Fuyuan, Yunnan, China.

Toxics

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Coal Resources and Safe Mining & College of Geosciences and Surveying Engineering, China University of Mining and Technology, Beijing 100083, China.

Xuanwei and the neighboring Fuyuan (XF) counties in Yunnan Province have the highest lung cancer incidence rates in China. Previous studies suggest that the nano-minerals released during the combustion of locally sourced "smoky" (bituminous) coal are the primary contributors to these elevated cancer rates. The coal ash generated during combustion predominantly consists of nano-minerals, which can be resuspended into the atmosphere during routine ash-handling activities.

The Characteristics, Sources, and Health Risks of Volatile Organic Compounds in an Industrial Area of Nanjing.

Toxics

November 2024

Joint International Research Laboratory of Climate and Environment Change, Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Atmospheric Environment Monitoring and Pollution Control, Collaborative Innovation Center of Atmospheric Environment and Equipment Technology, School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, Nanjing 210044, China.

This study investigates the chemical complexity and toxicity of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from national petrochemical industrial parks and their effects on air quality in an industrial area of Nanjing, China. Field measurements were conducted from 1 December 2022, to 17 April 2023, focusing on VOC concentrations and speciations, diurnal variations, ozone formation potential (OFP), source identification, and associated health risks. The results revealed an average total VOC (TVOC) concentration of 15.

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and microplastics (MPs) in the atmosphere raise widespread apprehension due to their association with the ecosystem and public health. The accumulation of airborne MPs and PTEs was analyzed in leaves, and the Pollution Index (PI) was calculated along an industrial, residential, and rural gradient in Bangladesh. Only polyethylene terephthalate (PET) was found in the highest concentration in industrial areas compared to other areas.

The use of ecofriendly natural minerals in photocatalytic processes to deal with the antimicrobial activity (AA) associated with antibiotics in aqueous systems is still incipient. Therefore, in this work, the capacity of a natural iron material (NIM) in photo-treatments, generating reactive species, to remove the antibiotic enrofloxacin and decrease its associated AA from water is presented. Initially, the fundamental composition, oxidation states, bandgap, point of zero charge, and morphological characteristics of the NIM were determined, denoting the NIM's feasibility for photocatalytic processes.
