Background: Uzbekistan, a highly endemic country for hepatitis B virus (HBV), introduced infant vaccination with hepatitis B vaccine (HepB) in 2001. Since 2002, it had ≥90 % reported immunization coverage for ≥3 doses of HepB (HepB3) and the birth dose (HepB-BD). However, the impact of HepB vaccination and the progress towards achieving the regional hepatitis B control and global viral hepatitis B elimination goals had not been assessed.

Background & Aims: Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) arises from a persistent hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, complicating efforts for a functional cure. Kupffer cells (KCs), liver-resident macrophages, are pivotal in mediating immune tolerance to HBV. Although CD163 marks M2-polarized KCs, its precise role in HBV infection remains unclear and warrants further investigation.

However, viral hepatitis services have not been routinely integrated into South African correctional facilities. We aimed to assess prevalence of HBV infection and HCV infection among people accessing HIV services and assess the feasibility of viral hepatitis service integration in a South African correctional centre.

Viral hepatitis B is infamous for being contracted in young adulthood and adolescence, as high-risk behaviors like unprotected sexual intercourse and intravenous drug abuse are common. Most infections caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV) are cleared without any long-term sequelae, but some may persist and cause chronic hepatitis B (CHB). This chronicity may produce a state of prolonged inflammation and significantly increase the risk of developing colorectal adenomas (CRA) and colorectal carcinomas (CRC).
