René Couteaux (1909-1999) and the morphological identification of synapses.

Biol Cell

August 2006

Département de Cytologie, Université Pierre et Marie Curie, 7 Quai Saint Bernard, 75005 Paris, France.

During a historical research, we realized that René Couteaux (1909-1999) was the first histologist who stained the postsynaptic structure of the neuromuscular junction. By means of Janus Green B dye, he revealed the membranous 'subneural apparatus' related to the 'synaptic gutter'. Hence, he justified the use of the physiological term 'synapse' in histology.

The aim of the study was to investigate the mechanisms of myocardial lesions induced by stress in conscious, intact pigs. The animals were subjected to 24 h immobilization, controls were kept in normal conditions. The pigs were killed by electric shock and exsanguination.

1. The effect of the calcium channel blocker nisoldipine on the myocardial content of lipid peroxidation products (malondialdehyde (MDA), conjugated double bonds (CDB), fluorescent end-products (RF) and mitochondrial adenine nucleotides) was investigated in conscious pigs (n = 14) subjected to 24 h of immobilization stress. Histoenzymatic and electron microscopic studies of the myocardium were also performed.

[Tests of contracture and sensitivity to malignant hyperthermia in 27 patients].

Ann Fr Anesth Reanim

June 1988

Département d'Anesthésie-Réanimation Chirurgicale, Hôpital B, CHR, Lille.

Twenty-seven patients, four of whom had presented with a crisis of malignant hyperthermia and the 23 other being close relatives of such patients, underwent a muscle biopsy so as to determine their susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia. Halothane-caffeine contracture tests, interpreted in accordance with the criteria of the European Group on Malignant Hyperthermia, yielded the following results: 13 positive (MHS), 10 negative (MHN), 4 equivocal (MHE). The history, clinical examination, CPK level, histoenzymatic morphology and electron microscopic study did not provide information sensitive enough to use for the detection of susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia.

The metabolic apport of prokaryotic symbionts in the fat body of Blattella germanica was investigated by histoenzymatic methods, using chlortetracycline-treated and normal strains. In the experimental insects, bacteriocytes showed a decreased oxidoreductase activity, whereas the staining intensity of the other cell types was generally unchanged. Electron microscopic observations showed that some bacteria were still present in the bacteriocytes of the treated insects, but exhibited degeneration patterns to a different extent; therefore, they are not likely to carry on any enzymatic activity.
